The ''Mortal Kombat'' comic books series included the official ''Mortal Kombat'' comics by Midway Games, Midway and Mortal Kombat (Malibu Comics), a licensed adaptation series by Malibu Comics that was published in 1994-1995. There are thus two different lineups of ''Mortal Kombat'' comics: the tie-ins published by Midway (some of them made by ''Mortal Kombat'' co-creator John Tobias) and DC Comics that closely followed the storyline of the games, and the Malibu series, which took a few liberties with the source material. Jax Briggs is a fictional character in the ''Mortal Kombat'' fighting game franchise by Midway Games and NetherRealm Studios. Introduced in ''Mortal Kombat II'' (1993) as the leader of a Special Forces unit, he became a mainstay of the series, including as the protagonist of the action-adventure spin-off '' Mortal Kombat: Special Forces'' (2000). The character is distinguished by his metal bionic arms, which he first received in ''Mortal Kombat 3'' (1995), and his abilities are based around his upper-body strength. Smoke (Mortal Kombat)
Smoke is a fictional character in the '' Mortal Kombat'' fighting game franchise by Midway Games/NetherRealm Studios. He debuted in ''Mortal Kombat II'' (1993) as a hidden opponent and became a secret playable character in ''Mortal Kombat 3'' (1995), making him the franchise's first unlockable fighter. In keeping with his namesake, he is distinguished by the smoke fumes emitting from his body and his smoke-based powers. A member of the fictional Lin Kuei clan, Smoke has been depicted as both a human ninja and a cyborg in the series. He is also a close friend of fellow clansman Sub-Zero. The character's original storyline sees him forcibly transformed into a cyborg by his clan, but he retains his human soul. This allows him to join Sub-Zero in defending Earthrealm. Ed Boon
Edward John Boon (born February 22, 1964) is an American video game programmer, voice actor, and director who was employed for over 15 years at Midway Games and since 2011 has worked for Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment in its daughter company NetherRealm Studios. Boon is best known for the widely popular ''Mortal Kombat'' series, which he created with John Tobias, and the ''Injustice'' series. Life and career Boon was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, on February 22, 1964 and graduated from high school at Loyola Academy in Wilmette. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and computer science from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. After graduation, he was employed by Williams Entertainment in their pinball department, working on approximately 20 pinball games over the next two years. Kung Lao ( or ) is a fictional character in the ''Mortal Kombat'' fighting game franchise by Midway Games and NetherRealm Studios. A Shaolin monk, he debuted in ''Mortal Kombat II'' (1993). He is depicted as a primary hero in the series, including as one of the protagonists of the action-adventure spin-off '' Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks'' (2005). The character is also a descendant of the Great Kung Lao, the first Earthrealm champion of the Mortal Kombat tournament. Baraka is a fictional character in the ''Mortal Kombat'' fighting game franchise by Midway Games/ NetherRealm Studios.
