Montauk Division
The Montauk Branch is a rail line owned and operated by the Long Island Rail Road in the U.S. state of New York. The branch runs the length of Long Island, 115 miles (185 km) from Long Island City on the west to Montauk on the east. However, in LIRR maps and schedules for public use, the term ''Montauk Branch'' refers to the line east of Babylon; the line west of there is covered by Babylon Branch schedules, and a few Montauk Branch trains operate via the Main Line west of Babylon due to increased track capacities. Cannonball (LIRR Train)
The ''Cannonball'' is a seasonal named train operated by the Long Island Rail Road between Penn Station and Montauk. The train operates from May through October, running Fridays to Montauk and Sundays to New York. Route The ''Cannonball'' utilizes the Main Line between Penn Station and Jamaica and continues to Montauk either via the entire Montauk Branch or via the Main Line and Central Branch to the Montauk Branch depending on the schedule. Penny Bridge (LIRR Station)
Penny Bridge was a station along the Long Island Rail Road's Lower Montauk Branch that runs from Long Island City to Jamaica, Queens, in the state of New York. During its existence, the station served local industry as well as the Calvary Cemetery. Before the Kosciuszko Bridge was built, it also served businesses on the Brooklyn side of Newtown Creek (the name referring to the bridge that formerly connected Laurel Hill Boulevard to Meeker Avenue before it was closed in 1939) prior to the closure and removal of the bridge. History This station first opened on June 26, 1854, by the Flushing Railroad to serve Calvary Cemetery. The Flushing Railroad was purchased by the New York and Flushing Railroad in April 1859. The station, in June 1859, was renamed Calvary Cemetery. The station closed on November 14, 1869. Haberman (LIRR Station)
Haberman was a station along the Long Island Rail Road's Lower Montauk Branch that was located at the intersection of Rust Street and 50th Street in Maspeth, Queens. The station is named after the Haberman Steel Enamel Works in Berlin Village. Haberman opened as a station for the convenience of workmen in September 1892; service was furnished by the Long Island City-East New York Rapid Transit trains. There never was a station building. The station still had manual railroad crossing gates and a guard shack as recently as 1973. It was closed on March 16, 1998 along with Penny Bridge, Fresh Pond, Glendale and Richmond Hill stations; average daily westbound ridership at the station in 1997 was 3. In January 2018, Haberman was one of 8 stations on the Lower Montauk Branch that were considered for reopening in a study sponsored by the New York City Department of Transportation. Fresh Pond (LIRR Station)
Fresh Pond (formerly known as Bushwick Junction) was a Long Island Rail Road station along the Lower Montauk Branch, located on an open cut near Fresh Pond Road and Metropolitan Avenue in Fresh Pond, Queens, on the border between the neighborhoods of Maspeth and Ridgewood. This station had one low-level island platform between the two southernmost tracks (for eastbound trains) and one low-level side platform serving the northernmost track (for Long Island City-bound trains). However, the platforms were actually a wide area of dirt and gravel. The island platform had a small tin shelter. The only way to reach the station was via a narrow walkway that began at the intersection of Metropolitan Avenue and Fresh Pond Road and went behind a car rental parking lot. It led to an overpass that had staircases going down to each platform. Glendale (LIRR Station)
Glendale was a Long Island Rail Road station along the Lower Montauk Branch, located in Glendale, Queens at Edsall Avenue and 73rd Street, near Central Avenue, at the ''All Faiths Monuments'' factory for the All Faiths Cemetery. This station had two "platforms" which were just strips of pavement besides the tracks signed as the station, and two tracks. In recent years, proposals to bring back passenger service along the Lower Montauk Branch have been suggested. History The station opened around June 1869 (although some sources claim it was built in 1868) and contained a small station house along the eastbound tracks. Richmond Hill (LIRR Station)
Richmond Hill is a closed station on the Montauk Branch of the Long Island Rail Road in the Richmond Hill neighborhood of Queens in New York City. The station is located at Myrtle Avenue and cuts diagonally from the intersection of Jamaica Avenue and Lefferts Boulevard through to Hillside Avenue. The station has two tracks and an island platform. Richmond Hill was the only station on the Lower Montauk Branch that was elevated with a high-level platform for passengers to wait for trains; the others were at ground level, with low-level platforms. Richmond Hill station was originally built by the South Side Railroad of Long Island in 1869 as Clarenceville station. Montauk Cutoff
The Montauk Cutoff is an abandoned railroad right-of-way in Long Island City, Queens, New York City, that connected the Long Island Rail Road's Main Line and Lower Montauk Branch. Route The Montauk Cutoff is a cutoff approximately one-third of a mile in length and was double-tracked for its entire length. It begins just west of Sunnyside and Arch Street Yards (), after which it runs west parallel to Skillman Avenue and passes over the tracks leading to the East River Tunnels and Hunterspoint Avenue. Long Island City Station
Long Island City is a rail terminal of the Long Island Rail Road in the Hunters Point and Long Island City neighborhoods of Queens, New York City. Located within the City Terminal Zone at Borden Avenue and Second Street, it is the westernmost LIRR station in Queens and the end of both the Main Line and Montauk Branch. The station consists of one passenger platform located at ground level and is wheelchair accessible. Service The station is served only during weekday rush hours in the peak direction by diesel trains from the Oyster Bay, Montauk, or Port Jefferson Branches via the Main Line.
