Montana Highway 42 (MT 42) is a short, state highway in the U.S. state of Montana, connecting MT 24 with downtown Glasgow. Formerly Highway 24W, Highway 42 (its route number a reversal of "24") runs northwest from where Highway 24 crosses the BNSF Railway's Northern Transcon, staying parallel to the tracks until it turns right in Glasgow's downtown and dives under the railroad to meet with and terminates at U.S. Route 2 (US 2). Route description MT 42 begins at a T-intersection with MT 24 southwest of Glasgow. MT 24 makes up the northern and southeastern leg of the intersection, while MT 42 heads to the northwest. For most of its length, the route is situated between the Milk River and the Northern Transcon. Glasgow is a city in and the county seat of Valley County, Montana, United States, the population was 3,202 at the 2020 census. Montana Highway 24 (MT 24) is a state highway in the US state of Montana. It begins at MT 200 near Brockway, and ends at the Saskatchewan border at Port of Opheim. Along the way, it intersects MT 117, MT 42 and US Highway 2 (US 2). Route description MT 24 begins at an intersection with MT 200 near Brockway. The route then proceeds northward through a rural area along the eastern shore of Fort Peck Lake. The highway turns to the west, crosses the Fort Peck Dam before passing through Fort Peck, Montana, and travels just yards from the northern shore of the lake. It intersects with MT 117, as it exits Fort Peck, and enters Wheeler. The highway heads northwest before turning due north. From here, it intersects MT 42, just prior to intersecting with US 2. Northern Transcon
The Northern Transcon, a route operated by the BNSF Railway, traverses the most northerly route of any railroad in the western United States. This route was originally part of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, Northern Pacific Railway, Great Northern Railway and Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway systems, merged into the Burlington Northern Railroad system in 1970. The Milk River is a tributary of the Missouri River, long, in the U.S. state of Montana and the Canadian province of Alberta. Rising in the Rocky Mountains, the river drains a sparsely populated, semi-arid watershed of , ending just east of Fort Peck, Montana.
