Modena, New York
Modena is a hamlet in Ulster County, New York, United States. It is located in the northwestern corner of the town of Plattekill, centered at the junction of the US 44/ NY 55 concurrency and NY 32. History The area was first settled in the late 17th century and was originally called "Clark's Corner". The name was changed to Modena in 1829, and the hamlet most likely was named for the Italian city of Modena. The Cole-Hasbrouck Farm Historic District and Thaddeus Hait Farm are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Present Day Modena has long been a primarily rural community with minimal development, although that has been changing enough for Hannaford to build one of its supermarkets on Route 32 just south of the junction in 2007. Great Republic (1853 Clipper)
When launched in 1853, ''Great Republic'' was the largest wooden ship in the world. She shared this title with another American-built ship, the steamship ''Adriatic''. She was also the largest full-rigged ship ever built in the United States. She was built by Donald McKay for trade on his own account to Australia. Just as she was completing loading in New York for her first commercial trip, she was involved in a disastrous fire. She was scuttled to try to save the hull, with only limited success. McKay decided to abandon the wreck to his insurers, who sold the damaged hull to new owners, who rebuilt her with three decks instead of four. She was employed on trans-Atlantic and California routes, with a period under contract to the French government for the Crimean War. She was never used on Australian routes. Thaddeus Hait Farm
The Thaddeus Hait Farm is located on Allhusen Road near the hamlet of Modena in the town of Plattekill, New York, United States. It is a property on both sides of the road consisting of 15 contributing properties in two distinct groups, together comprising a mostly intact early 19th-century family farm still used for that purpose today. Hait, a member of a prosperous Westchester County family, bought the original 97 acres (39 ha) in 1819. At the time the road was the busy Milton Turnpike, carrying much traffic from distilleries. Over the next nine years, he built the farm up with purchases adding , setting it into its present form. His grandson sold it in 1888. Two other owners later, in 1906, the Allhusen family after whom the road was renamed bought it for dairy farming and kept it until 1973.
