Mission Valley
Mission Valley is a wide river valley trending east–west in San Diego, California, United States, through which the San Diego River flows to the Pacific Ocean. For planning purposes the city of San Diego divides it into two neighborhoods: Mission Valley East and Mission Valley West. Mission Valley was the site of the first Spanish settlement in California, established in 1769. Mission Valley currently serves as an important shopping and entertainment center for San Diego. Several condominiums and apartments can also be found in the area. History The San Diego River valley was originally called Emat Kuseyaay, which was then named by the Spanish as La Cañada de San Diego. Cañada in Spanish means gully, ravine, or glen. Scott Peters (politician)
Scott Harvey Peters (born June 17, 1958) is an American lawyer and politician serving as the U.S. representative from California's 50th congressional district since 2023. His district includes both coastal and central portions of San Diego, as well as the suburbs of Poway and Coronado. A member of the Democratic Party, Peters served two terms on the San Diego City Council from 2000 to 2008, and was the first person to hold the post of president of the city council (2006–2008). He also served as a commissioner for the Unified Port of San Diego before becoming a member of Congress. Early life, education, and legal career Peters was born in 1958 in Springfield, Ohio. He was raised in Michigan. His father was a Lutheran minister and his mother was a homemaker. California State Route 163
State Route 163 (SR 163), or the Cabrillo Freeway, is a state highway in San Diego, California. The stretch of the former US 395 freeway runs from Downtown San Diego just south of an interchange with Interstate 5 (I-5), extending north through historic Balboa Park and various neighborhoods of San Diego to an interchange with I-15 in the neighborhood of Miramar. The freeway is named after Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, the first European to navigate the coast of present-day California. The historic section of freeway through Balboa Park south of I-8 was the first freeway in San Diego County and one of the first in California. Route 15, consisting of the contiguous segments of State Route 15 (SR 15) and Interstate 15 (I-15), is a major north–south state highway and Interstate Highway in the U.S. state of California, connecting San Bernardino, Riverside, and San Diego Counties. Snapdragon Stadium, known during its planning and early construction phases as Aztec Stadium, is an outdoor college football stadium on the west coast of the United States, in San Diego, California. It is located on the campus of San Diego State University at SDSU Mission Valley, a non-contiguous expansion parcel west of the main campus. Opened in August 2022, the 35,000-seat stadium is the home of the San Diego State Aztecs of the Mountain West Conference in NCAA Division I FBS. Jack Murphy (sportswriter)
Jack Murphy (February 5, 1923 – September 24, 1980) was a sports editor and columnist for the ''San Diego Union'' newspaper from 1951–1980. Jack Murphy Stadium was named in his honor. He was affectionately referred to by fans simply as "The Murph" and "El Murph" by Spanish speakers. Early life Murphy was born on February 5, 1923 in Denver, Colorado. He was the older brother of New York Mets broadcaster Bob Murphy. Career Murphy moved from Fort Worth, Texas in 1951 to become a sportswriter for the ''San Diego Union'' newspaper. On December 21, 1960, Murphy wrote a column for the ''San Diego Union'' proposing the Los Angeles Chargers American Football League team become a San Diego franchise. Over the next year, through his ''Union'' articles, he would become a key figure in persuading San Diegans to relocate the Chargers. San Diego Stadium
San Diego Stadium was a multi-purpose stadium on the west coast of the United States, in San Diego, California. The stadium opened in 1967 as San Diego Stadium and was known as Jack Murphy Stadium from 1981 to 1997. From 1997 to 2017, the stadium's naming rights were owned by San Diego-based telecommunications equipment company Qualcomm, and the stadium was known as Qualcomm Stadium or simply The Q. The naming rights expired on June 14, 2017, and were purchased by San Diego County Credit Union, renaming the facility as SDCCU Stadium on September 19, 2017; those naming rights expired in December 2020.
