Millennium Skate Park, also known as Owl's Head Skate Park, is a skate park in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, located in Owl's Head Park, adjacent to the Sunset Park Greenway. History The park opened in 2001, designed by pro-skater Andy Kessler, it was the first concrete skatepark built in Brooklyn. Bay Ridge, Brooklyn
Bay Ridge is a neighborhood in the southwest corner of the New York City borough (New York City), borough of Brooklyn. It is bounded by Sunset Park, Brooklyn, Sunset Park to the north, Dyker Heights, Brooklyn, Dyker Heights to the east, the Narrows and the Belt Parkway to the west, and Fort Hamilton, Fort Hamilton Army Base and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge to the south. Sunset Park Greenway
The Sunset Park Greenway (SPGW; also known as the Shore Parkway Greenway Connector) is a 4.41 mile (7.10 km)-long, signed cycle route traversing Sunset Park, Brooklyn with portions running through the adjacent neighborhoods of Bay Ridge, Borough Park and Kensington. Route description The Sunset Park Greenway's north/east-bound route begins as a separate bicycle/pedestrian path at the northwestern terminus of the Shore Parkway Greenway at the 69th Street pier at Bay Ridge Avenue and Shore Road in Bay Ridge. The curved, terraced path, runs north for one block along the western edge of Shore Road to 68th Street where it crosses Shore Road and enters Owl's Head Park. Andy Kessler (skateboarder)
Andrew Kessler (June 11, 1961 – August 10, 2009) was a Greek-born American skateboarder, skatepark builder, and prominent member of a loose-knit collective of skateboarders and graffiti artists called the Soul Artists of Zoo York. Kessler is featured in the documentary ''Deathbowl to Downtown''. Early life Andy and his twin sister were born in Athens, Greece, adopted by an American family and raised on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York. He started skateboarding in the early 1970s in Central Park, on a short hill near to its West 69th Street entrance. He soon joined a group of inner city kids congregating around "the bandshell," though the scene was primarily based in the Rumsey Playfield playground directly behind Central Park's Naumburg Bandshell, inside the park at West 71st Street, the street on which Kessler was raised. NYC Skateboard Coalition, established in 2017, is a community organization that advocates for New York City's skateparks and hosts NYC-based skateboard events. The NYC Skateboard Coalition supports the skateboarding community of New York City through hosting skate jams and skatepark clean-ups throughout the city. History Founding at Riverside Skatepark In the early 2010s, Ian Clarke, a local skater at Riverside Skatepark, learned about the history of Andy Kessler and Riverside Skatepark from Ricky Mujica. The history and significance of the skatepark made an impression on Clarke.
