Michael Barnes (British Politician)
Michael Cecil John Barnes CBE (22 September 1932 – 22 March 2018) was a British Labour Party politician, marketing consultant and senior public official. Barnes was born in Painswick, Gloucestershire to Major Cecil Barnes and Katherine Barnes. He studied at Malvern School before completing national service as a second lieutenant in the Wiltshire Regiment. He then went on to university, where he read Classics at Corpus Christi College, Oxford and joined the Labour Party in his final year. After graduating, Barnes worked for advertising agencies for several years. Barnes entered politics at the age of 32. Having unsuccessfully fought Wycombe in 1964, he was Member of Parliament for Brentford and Chiswick in 1966. As an MP, he argued in support for refugees from the Biafran Civil War and for Bangladesh in its fight for independence. Michael Barnes (North Carolina Politician)
Michael Barnes was the mayor pro tempore of Charlotte, North Carolina. He also served as acting mayor for a short time following the resignation of former mayor Patrick Cannon, who was arrested on March 26, 2014 for corruption charges. Barnes immediately became acting mayor upon Cannon's resignation. The City Council was then required to appoint a mayor to serve out the remainder of Cannon's term (through Dec. 2015). On April 7, the council voted to appoint Dan Clodfelter, a state senator, as the new mayor. Barnes, an attorney and a member of the Democratic Party, served as a member of the Charlotte City Council representing District 4 for four terms until he was elected to an at-large seat in the 2013 election. Following that election, he was chosen as the new mayor pro tem by his colleagues. Michael William Barnes (born 3 April 1985) is an English former first-class cricketer, a right-handed batsman who played primarily as a wicketkeeper. He was born at Frimley, Surrey. Michael Thomas Barnes (born 24 June 1988) is an English footballer who plays as a left winger. He is currently without a club, having left AFC Fylde in June 2015 after six years with the Lancashire club. Career Born in Chorley, Lancashire, Barnes was spotted playing for Conference North side Lancaster City in the FA Youth Cup and, after a successful trial in November 2005, the young winger joined Manchester United's youth academy that December. In his first season with the club, he made 16 appearances, including five for the Reserves. Michael Barnes (31 October 1932 – 14 May 2008) was an arts administrator and promoter, primarily in Northern Ireland, where he was director of the Belfast Festival at Queen's (originally the Queen's University Festival) and the Grand Opera House, Belfast. Born in Peckham, South London, he became interested in theatre while attending Alleyn's School on a scholarship. Having also received a scholarship to Wadham College, Oxford, he took a first in history and, after graduating, became a lecturer in modern history at the University of Edinburgh. Whilst in Edinburgh, he took part in shows during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, but found that "learning huge dollops of script wasn’t all that appealing". In 1961, he became a lecturer in history at Queen's University Belfast, but continued to have an interest in the arts.
