Michael B. Surbaugh
Michael B. Surbaugh was the 13th Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), having succeeded the retiring Wayne Brock on October 1, 2015. He was previously Group Director of HR, Innovation, Exploring and Learning for Life for the BSA. Surbaugh first joined the organization as a professional scouter in 1983. In November 2019, Surbaugh took a medical leave of absence. On December 29, 2019, Surbaugh's retirement was announced via an email to BSA volunteers. He was succeeded by Roger Mosby. Background Surbaugh earned his Eagle Scout award in Troop 360 in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania in 1976 and served on the summer camp staff of the Allegheny Trails Council, the predecessor of the Laurel Highlands Council. Chief Scout Executive
The Chief Scout Executive is the top professional of the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America. In most similar non-profit organizations, this is equivalent to the position of CEO, national executive director or secretary general. Roger Mosby is the current Chief Scout Executive, succeeding Michael B. Surbaugh in December 2019. Mosby was initially title President and CEO (not being a professional Scouter), however in May 2021 Mosby received a commission as a professional Scouter and was appointed to the Chief Scout Executive position in May 2021. This position should not be confused with the position of Chief Scout. Many National Scout associations still use this position; however, it is always for a volunteer position, not a paid one. Wayne Brock
Wayne Brock (born 1948) is a professional scouter, who served as the 12th Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America from 2012 to 2015. He had previously served as deputy Chief Scout Executive from 2009 to 2012. Biography Brock attended South Lenoir High School and graduated in 1966, receiving his Bachelor of Music Education degree from East Carolina University. He and his wife, Ernestine, have a son and one granddaughter. Brock began his Scouting career in 1972 as a district executive in New Bern, North Carolina, then served on the staff in Knoxville, Tennessee. Salem University is a private for-profit university in Salem, West Virginia. It has about 250 students on campus and about 600 online students that are enrolled in undergraduate as well as graduate programs. The university was founded by the Seventh Day Baptist Church in 1888. Professional Scouter
The Boy Scouts of America is an organization run by volunteers, however the day-to-day administration is performed by a staff of professional (or career) Scouters. The organization has professional staffing at every level—district, council, regional and national. The Chief Scout Executive is the top professional Scouter. The commissioner position is the second oldest in Scouting (Scoutmaster is the oldest) and is the origin of the professional Scouting positions, which is why position insignia of the professional Scouter have the ''wreath of service'' as a feature on all professional position patches. Roger C. Mosby is the President, CEO, and 14th Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), having succeeded the retiring Michael B. Surbaugh on December 29, 2019. He was previously Vice President of Human Resources for Kinder Morgan. Born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, his parents and family moved to Union County, Illinois where he attended elementary and high school. He graduated from Shawnee High School in Wolf Lake, Illinois, going on to Southeast Missouri State University earning a Bachelor of Science in 1973. Bethel Park, officially the Municipality of Bethel Park, is a borough with home rule status in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. BSA Membership Controversy
The Boy Scouts of America (BSA), one of the largest private youth organizations in the United States, has policies which prohibit those who are not willing to subscribe to the BSA's Declaration of Religious Principle, which has been interpreted by some as banning atheists, and, until January 2014, prohibited all "known or avowed homosexuals", from membership in its Scouting program.
