Mesquita Machado
Francisco Soares Mesquita Machado (born 18 April 1947), commonly known as simply Mesquita Machado, is a Portuguese former politician. A member of the Socialist Party, he was the mayor of Braga from the first democratic elections in 1976 until 2013. He was also a member of the Assembly of the Republic from the first elections in 1976 until 1991. Early life Mesquita Machado was born in 1947 in Pousada de Saramagos, a small village near Vila Nova de Famalicão in Braga District. At age five he migrated to Venezuela with his parents, and at 13 he returned to attend school in Braga while living with a great aunt. He is a qualified Metallurgical Engineer. Political career Mesquita Machado joined the Socialist Party in 1975 and was elected to the Assembly of the Republic in the following year's election, the first free elections since the Carnation Revolution. Braga ( , ; cel-x-proto, Bracara) is a city and a municipality, capital of the northwestern Portuguese district of Braga and of the historical and cultural Minho Province. 2009 Portuguese Local Elections
The Portuguese local elections of 2009 took place on 11 October. The elections consisted of three separate elections in the 308 Portuguese municipalities, the election for the Municipal Chambers, whose winner is elected president, another election for the Municipal Assembly and a last one for the lower-level Parish Assembly, whose winner is elected parish president. This last was held separately in the more than 4,000 parishes around the country. The elections took place just two weeks after the 2009 legislative election. The elections resulted almost in a tie between the Socialist Party and the Social Democratic Party, in which the Social Democrats lost almost 20 municipalities and also lost a considerable number of councilors. A suspended sentence is a sentence on conviction for a criminal offence, the serving of which the court orders to be deferred in order to allow the defendant to perform a period of probation.
