Meet Mr. Callaghan
''Meet Mr. Callaghan'' is a 1954 British crime film, crime drama film directed by Charles Saunders (director), Charles Saunders and starring Derrick De Marney. Based on the 1938 novel ''The Urgent Hangman'' by Peter Cheyney, which Cheyney had then turned into a play. Co-producer and star Derrick de Marney had directed the stage version of ''Meet Mr. Callaghan'' at the Garrick Theatre in 1952, which starred Derrick's brother Terence as Cheyney's private eye Slim Callaghan. Derrick played this role in the film. The play was notable for the Meet Mister Callaghan, theme music and score by Eric Spear which became a best-selling record for Les Paul. Plot Down at heel private detective Slim Callaghan is hired by young socialite Cynthis Meraulton to investigate other family members after her rich stepfather changes his will in her favour. Charles Saunders (director)
Charles Joel Saunders (8 April 1904 – 20 April 1997) was an English film director and screenwriter who began in the industry as a film editor, and who also contributed to television. He was the brother of the theatrical producer Sir Peter Saunders. Career Educated at Bedales, Saunders entered the film industry in 1927 and acted as assistant director and editor with such companies as Gaumont-British. His directorial debut was a romantic comedy called ''No Exit'' (which he wrote, produced and directed), about a publisher's daughter who wrongly believes that a humble staff writer of her father's is secretly a best-selling author. Lester William Polsfuss (June 9, 1915 – August 12, 2009), known as Les Paul, was an American jazz guitarist, jazz, country guitarist, country, and blues guitarist, songwriter, luthier, and inventor. He was one of the pioneers of the solid body, solid-body electric guitar, and his prototype, called the Log, served as inspiration for the Gibson Les Paul. Terence De Marney
Terence Arthur De Marney (1 March 190825 May 1971) was a British film, stage, radio and television actor, as well as theatre director and writer. Career Actor The son of Violet Eileen Concanen and Arthur De Marney, and the grandson of noted Victorian lithographer Alfred Concanen, his career in the theatre began in 1923 and continued almost without interruption, taking in film, radio and television parts. He toured with Mrs Patrick Campbell in '' The Last of Mrs. Cheyney''. In 1930 he played Gustave in ''The Lady of the Camellias'', and toured South Africa as Raleigh in '' Journey's End''. Michael Creighton Balfour (11 February 1918 – 24 October 1997) was an English actor, working mainly in British films and TV, following his TV debut in the BBC's ''The Marvellous History of St Bernard'', in 1938. John Longden
John Longden (11 November 1900 – 26 May 1971) was an English film actor. He appeared in more than 80 films between 1926 and 1964, including five films directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Biography Longden was born in the West Indies, the son of a Methodist missionary, and was educated at Kingswood School, Bath, Somerset. Originally intending to be a mining engineer, he worked for two years in a coal mine in Yorkshire, where he started acting in amateur theatrical companies. An introduction to Seymour Hicks saw him start acting on the legitimate stage, beginning with a walk-on part in ''Old Bill, MP''. He played in ''My Old Dutch'' with Albert Chevalier, then spent time with the Liverpool and Birmingham repertory theatres.
