Maryland Route 60
Maryland Route 60 (MD 60) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. Known for most of its length as Leitersburg Pike, the state highway runs from the intersection of Potomac Avenue and Northern Avenue/Eastern Boulevard in Hagerstown, Maryland, Hagerstown east to the Pennsylvania state line near Leitersburg, Maryland, Leitersburg, where the highway continues as Pennsylvania Route 316 (PA 316). MD 60 connects Hagerstown with Leitersburg and Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. MD 60 was paved over the course of an old Toll road, turnpike from Hagerstown toward Waynesboro in the mid-1920s. The state highway was reconstructed in the mid-1950s, including the highway's bypass of Leitersburg. Hagerstown is a city in Washington County, Maryland, United States and the county seat of Washington County. The population of Hagerstown city proper at the 2020 census was 43,527, and the population of the Hagerstown metropolitan area (extending into West Virginia) was 269,140. Hagerstown ranks as Maryland's sixth-largest incorporated city and is the largest city in the Panhandle. Hagerstown has a distinct topography, formed by stone ridges running from northeast to southwest through the center of town. Geography accordingly bounds its neighborhoods. These ridges consist of upper Stonehenge limestone. Many of the older buildings were built from this stone, which is easily quarried and dressed onsite. It whitens in weathering and the edgewise conglomerate and wavy laminae become distinctly visible, giving a handsome and uniquely " Cumberland Valley" appearance. Zion Reformed United Church Of Christ
'Zion Reformed United Church of Christ'', originally The German Reformed Church was founded in 1770 in Hagerstown, Maryland. The church, at 201 North Potomac Street, was the first within the town limits. It is the oldest church building in Washington County, Maryland that has been in continuous use as a church since its construction. During the American Civil War, the church’s bell tower was used as a lookout by Union troops under the command of General George Armstrong Custer, George Custer. History The 18th century western frontier of the Maryland colony had previously been ravaged by marauding Shawnee and Delaware Indians after General Edward Braddock’s defeat at Fort Duquesne. In spite of the danger, German settlers erected a log schoolhouse around 1766 on the grounds of the present church, an area then known as Potato Hill.
