Maple Airport
Maple Airport was a small airfield in the Township of Vaughan (now a city) in York Region, Ontario, Canada that was open from 1955 until 1987. The airport, established by Marion Alice Orr, one of Canada's first women pilots, consisted of two runways in an X pattern; and . The early runway were grass strip and paved over in 1960. At one point, the Maple Airport was the third-busiest private commercial and civilian airport in Canada not to have a control tower. The urbanization of Vaughan and the Maple area led to the closure of the airport in 1987. Nothing remains of the airport today, which is now the site of a housing development and Le Petite Prince Catholic Elementary School. A small park in the neighbourhood, on Avro Road, was named Maple Airport Park in honour of the former airport. Maple is a neighbourhood in Vaughan, York Region, Ontario, Canada. It is located northwest of Toronto. Maple was founded as the village of Maple, located at the intersection of Major Mackenzie Drive and Keele Street. Geography Maple is located in the Golden Horseshoe of Southern Ontario. To the northeast of is the Oak Ridges Moraine, which supplies a lot of water to the Greater Toronto Area. The west branch of the Don River rises to the northwest and flows 1 km west of Maple. Several creeks are to the east and the Black Creek begins slightly west of Vellore. Humber River flows in the west, the Don River flows to the northern and the eastern part. Vaughan () (2021 population 323,103) is a city in Ontario, Canada. It is located in the Regional Municipality of York, just north of Toronto. The Regional Municipality of York, also called York Region, is a regional municipality in Southern Ontario, Canada, between Lake Simcoe and Toronto. Marion Alice Orr
Marion Alice Orr, CM (born Powell; 25 June 1918 – 4 April 1995) was a pioneering Canadian aviator who was the first woman to run a flying school. She served with the Air Transport Auxiliary during World War II and was awarded the Order of Canada in 1986. Early life Orr was born Marion Alice Powell in Toronto, Ontario. On 5 January 1940, she obtained her private pilot's licence after working to pay for her flying lessons. She then worked as an aircraft inspector at de Havilland Canada, and qualified for her commercial licence two years afterwards. She was the second woman in Canada to qualify as an air traffic control assistant. In 1942 she married D.K. "Deke" Orr. He helped her gain her instructor's licence in 1942. Avro Canada was a Canadian aircraft manufacturing company.
