The company purchased Webster, Massachusetts-based Commerce Insurance Group, a major provider of vehicle insurance, for over €1.5 billion in October 2007. Ignacio Hernando de Larramendi y Montiano (1921–2001) was a Spanish entrepreneur, Carlist militant and author. Larramendi was as a longtime head of MAPFRE and is often counted among 100 most influential Spanish businessmen of the 20th century.
