In March 2019 it has been revealed, by an international team, led by the Israeli geologist professor Amos Frumkin, after a second measurement that its length is almost two times longer than was measured back in the 1980s. The cave was measured over a period of two years and has a length of over that will continue to increase as more salt dissolves. Salt is a mineral composed primarily of sodium chloride (NaCl), a chemical compound belonging to the larger class of salts; salt in the form of a natural crystalline mineral is known as rock salt or halite. Mount Sodom
Mount Sodom ( he, הר סדום, ''Har Sedom'') is a hill along the southwestern part of the Dead Sea in Israel; it is part of the Judaean Desert Nature Reserve. It takes its name from the legendary city of Sodom, whose destruction is the subject of a narrative in the Bible. History Mount Sodom began its rise hundreds of thousands of years ago and continues to grow taller at a rate of a year. Movements of the Great Rift Valley system, along with the pressure generated by the slow accumulation of earth and rock, pressed down on the layers of salt, creating Mount Sodom. It is about 80% salt, high, capped by a layer of limestone, clay and conglomerate that was dragged along as it was squeezed up from the valley floor. Amos Frumkin
Amos Frumkin is an Israeli geologist and speleologist. Frumkin (עמוס פרומקין; born in 1953) is a professor of geology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Frumkin was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1953. His expertise is the geology of caves. As an active speleologist, he founded and directs the Cave Research Center of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Research Frumkin's research fields cover karst, cave morphology, environment, and sediments, as indicators of palaeoclimate, palaeohydrology, geological history, tectonics, karst aquifers and human evolution. He also studies underground ancient water supply systems. He uses earth-sciences methods, such as radiometric dating and stable isotopes, collaborating with archaeologists, biologists and karstologists around the globe.
