The Williamson Diamond Mine (also known as the Mwadui mine) is a diamond mine northeast of Shinyanga in Tanzania; it became well known as the first significant diamond mine outside of South Africa. The kimberlite pipe was found in March 1940 and the mine established by John Williamson (geologist), John Williamson, a Canadian geologist, and has been continuous operation since then, making it one of the oldest continuously operating diamond mines in the world. Over its lifetime it has produced over 19 million Carat (unit), carats (3,800 kg) of diamonds. A 2020 report by ''The Guardian'' said that high-quality pink diamonds from the mine could value up to $700,000 a carat. The Williamson mine was once owned by its namesake Williamson and later nationalization, nationalized by the government of Tanzania. Prospecting is the first stage of the geological analysis (followed by Mining engineering#Pre-mining, exploration) of a territory. It is the search for minerals, fossils, precious metals, or mineral specimens. It is also known as fossicking. Traditionally prospecting relied on direct observation of mineralization in rock outcrops or in sediments. The Williamson pink diamond is a flawless pink diamond set in a brooch that is part of the Royal Collection. History The rough diamond was discovered at the Williamson diamond mine in Tanganyika in October 1947. A month later, the owner of the mine, Canadian geologist John Williamson, gave the uncut stone to Princess Elizabeth as a wedding present. In 1948, the princess and her grandmother, Queen Mary, visited the London diamond cutters Briefel and Lemer to watch the diamond being cut into a round brilliant.
