Mpumalanga High Court
The Mpumalanga Division of the High Court of South Africa is a superior court of law with general jurisdiction over the Mpumalanga province of South Africa. The main seat of the court in Mbombela (Nelspruit) opened on 13 May 2019. The court also has a local seat at Middelburg. Before the opening of the division, the Gauteng Division at Pretoria had jurisdiction over Mpumalanga and circuit courts of that division sat at Mbombela and Middelburg. Mpumalanga
Mpumalanga () is one of the nine provinces of South Africa. The name means "East", or literally "The Place Where the Sun Rises" in the Nguni languages. Mpumalanga lies in eastern South Africa, bordering Eswatini and Mozambique. It shares borders with the South African provinces of Limpopo to the north, Gauteng to the west, the Free State (province), Free State to the southwest, and KwaZulu-Natal to the south. The capital is Mbombela. High Court Of South Africa
The High Court of South Africa is a superior court of law in South Africa. It is divided into nine provinces of South Africa, provincial divisions, some of which sit in more than one location. Each High Court division has general jurisdiction over a defined geographical area in which it is situated. The decisions of a division are binding on magistrates' court (South Africa), magistrates' courts within its area of jurisdiction. The High Court has jurisdiction over all matters, but it usually only hears civil matters involving more than 400,000 South African rand, rand, and serious criminal cases. Frans Legodi
Malesela Francis Legodi (born 9 July 1954) is a South African retired judge of the High Court of South Africa. He was the first Judge President of the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court from August 2017 to August 2023. He joined the bench in October 2004 as a puisne judge of the Gauteng Division. Before that, he was a practising attorney in Mpumalanga. Early life and education Legodi was born on 9 July 1954 on a farm near Ga-Maphoto in the former Northern Transvaal. He was the seventh of eight siblings and grew up in the nearby township of Ga-Maja outside Polokwane. He matriculated in 1975 at Mokomene High School in Soekmekaar and went on to the University of the North the following year. Initially registered for a BCom degree, he soon transferred to a BProc and, after a brief hiatus from 1978 to 1979 due to a lack of funds, he graduated in 1981. Gauteng Division
The Gauteng Division of the High Court of South Africa is a superior court, superior court of law which has general jurisdiction over the South African province of Gauteng and the eastern part of North West (South African province), North West province. The main seat of the division is at Pretoria, while a local seat at Johannesburg has concurrent jurisdiction over the southern parts of Gauteng. Superior Court
In common law systems, a superior court is a court of general jurisdiction over civil and criminal legal cases. Segopotje Sheila Mphahlele (born August 1968) is a South African judge who is currently serving as the Judge President of the Mpumalanga High Court. Formerly an attorney and insolvency practitioner, she has been a judge of the High Court of South Africa since December 2013. Born in Pretoria, Mphahlele was appointed to the Gauteng Division of the High Court in 2013, but she transferred to the Mpumalanga Division when it was established in 2019.
