More Dark Than Shark
''More Dark Than Shark'' is a 1986 book by Brian Eno and Russell Mills. It features the lyrics to Eno's songs, each accompanied by an artwork inspired by the song's lyrics by Mills. Most of the lyrics and artworks are accompanied by notes by Eno and Mills on the lyrics and the interpretation of them as used for the artwork. The book is arranged chronologically, with songs arranged according to the album on which they appeared. Each album forms a chapter and is introduced by a commentary by Rick Poynor, these commentaries are largely formed through interviews with Eno. The commentaries cover Eno and Mills's influences, working methods, biography and philosophies, and are illustrated with excerpts from Eno's working notebooks. Brian Eno
Brian Peter George Jean-Baptiste de la Salle Eno (, born 15 May 1948), also mononymously known as Eno, is an English musician, songwriter, record producer, visual artist, and activist. He is best known for his pioneering contributions to ambient music and electronica, and for producing, recording, and writing works in rock music, rock and pop music. A self-described "non-musician", Eno has helped introduce unconventional concepts and approaches to contemporary music. He has been described as one of popular music's most influential and innovative figures. In 2019, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Roxy Music. Born in Suffolk, Eno studied painting and experimental music at the art school of Ipswich Civic College in the mid-1960s, and then at Winchester School of Art. Russell Mills (artist)
Russell Mills (born 1952, Ripon, Yorkshire, England) is a British artist. He has produced record covers and book covers for Brian Eno, the Cocteau Twins, Michael Nyman, David Sylvian, Peter Gabriel, and Nine Inch Nails. As a recording artist, he has collaborated with musicians including David Sylvian, Ian McCulloch and Peter Gabriel. He has released three CDs with his recording project Undark, one of them on the British ambient label Em:t Records. The last, ''Pearl + Umbra,'' was released on Bella Union, to positive reviews. Mills was Visiting Tutor (until 2012) at the Royal College of Art, Visiting Professor at the Glasgow School of Art. Rick Poynor is an English writer on design, graphic design, typography, and visual culture. Career He began as a general visual arts journalist, working on ''Blueprint'' magazine in London. After founding ''Eye'' magazine, which he edited from 1990 to 1997, he focused increasingly on visual communication. He is writer-at-large and columnist of ''Eye'', and a contributing editor and columnist of ''Print'' magazine. In 1999, Poynor was a co-ordinator of the First Things First 2000 manifesto initiated by ''Adbusters''. In 2003, he co-founded Design Observer, a weblog for design writing and discussion, with William Drenttel, Jessica Helfand, and Michael Bierut. He wrote for the site until 2005. An art diary, art journal or visual journal is a daily journal kept by artists, often containing both words and sketches, and occasionally including mixed media elements such as collages. Such books will frequently contain rough workings, in cartoon form, of ideas later to appear in finished works, as well as acting as a normal diary, by allowing the artist to record their day-to-day activities and emotions. These diaries not only give art historians a valuable opportunity to explore the creation process of these finished works, but they are a useful biographical tool. ''Here Come the Warm Jets'' is the debut solo studio album by English musician Brian Eno (mononymously credited as "''Eno''"), released on Island Records on 8 February 1974. It was recorded and produced by Eno following his departure from Roxy Music, and blends glam rock, glam and pop music, pop stylings with avant-garde approaches. The album features numerous guests, including several of Eno's former Roxy Music bandmates along with members of Hawkwind, Matching Mole, Pink Fairies, Sharks (band formed 1972), Sharks, Sweetfeed, and King Crimson. Eno employed unusual directions and production methods to coax unexpected results from the musicians. ''Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy)'' is the second solo studio album by English musician Brian Eno ( mononymously credited as "''Eno''"), released in November 1974 by Island Records. Unlike his debut album ''Here Come the Warm Jets'', which featured 16 musicians, this album utilized a core band of five instrumentalists: Eno (keyboards, guitar), Phil Manzanera (guitar), Brian Turrington (bass guitar), Freddie Smith (drums), and Robert Wyatt (percussion). The album marked a transition from the rock-based music of Eno's previous releases towards his late 1970s ambient work. Only five of its fourteen tracks feature vocals, a contrast with his previous vocal albums. ''Before and After Science'' is the fifth solo studio album by English musician Brian Eno, originally released by Polydor Records in December 1977 in the United Kingdom and by Island U.S. soon after. ''More Blank Than Frank'' and ''Desert Island Selection'' are 1986 compilation albums of music by Brian Eno. ''More Blank Than Frank'' is the title given to the vinyl LP and cassette releases, and ''Desert Island Selection'' is the name used for the CD version. The three versions were issued at the same time, though they differ somewhat in the ordering and in the songs that were used. The LP features 10 tracks, the cassette, 12, and the CD, 11. The releases are compilations of many of Eno's earlier solo works, ranging from 1973's ''Here Come the Warm Jets'' to 1978's ''Music for Airports''. The LP release contains a somewhat wider variety of material, including a couple of darker and rockier songs ("The Great Pretender" and "King's Lead Hat").
