Moonchild (1974 Film)
''Moonchild'' is a 1974 American independent horror film directed and produced by Alan Gadney. It was originally shot in 1971 as a student film (a Masters thesis project at the University of Southern California). The film received limited commercial release under the title ''The Moon Child'', but failed to make much of an initial impression on audiences. It has since gained recognition among film enthusiasts who discovered it due to its impressive cast of character actors: John Carradine, Victor Buono, Pat Renella, Janet Landgard and William Challee. Plot A young man (The Moon Child) is reincarnated every 25 years, with each life ending in a stay at a mission hotel. There he meets characters from his first life, all of whom are doomed to relive their roles in his life (and death) as well. The cycle will end when his spirit reaches a state of perfection by purging its negative (violent) impulses. Actor John Carradine is ''The Walker of The World'', an otherworldly poet who is th ...

The album's top-charting single, "Moonchild", shares its name with Aleister Crowley's novel, while "Love Under Will" is a phrase from Crowley's ''Book of the Law.'' The lyrics for "The Watchman" and "Last Exit for the Lost" reference H. P. Lovecraft's character Cthulhu. The third track "Phobia" is stylistically simil ...

Mooncalf
A mooncalf (or moon-calf) is a monstrous birth, the abortive fetus of a cow or other farm animal. The term was occasionally applied to an abortive human fetus. The term derives from the once widespread superstition, present in many European folk traditions, that such malformed creatures were the product of the sinister influence of the Moon on fetal development. The earliest recorded use of the term was in 1565, referring to a human false pregnancy. Modern usage The term came to also refer to any monstrous or grotesque thing. Shakespeare, for instance, used the term to describe Caliban, the deformed servant of Prospero, in ''The Tempest''. In H. G. Wells's 1901 novel ''The first Men in the Moon'', large creatures domesticated by the Selenites are referred to as "mooncalves". Mooncalf is used as a derogatory term indicating someone is a dullard, fool, or otherwise not particularly bright or sharp. For example, W. C. Fields in '' The Bank Dick'' (1940) advises his prospective s ...

Moonchild (novel)
''Moonchild'' (a.k.a., ''Liber LXXXI ook 81 or The Butterfly Net'') is a novel written by the British occultist Aleister Crowley in 1917. Its plot involves a magical war between a group of white magicians, led by Simon Iff, and a group of black magicians, over an unborn child. It was first published by Mandrake Press in 1929 and its recent edition is published by Weiser. Albeit not strictly a ''roman à clef'', the novel depicts numerous acquaintances of Crowley's, thinly disguised as fictional characters. Grady McMurtry's "Note on ''Moonchild''" provides some insight into the possible real characters on which the author based the characters in the novel. Crowley portrays MacGregor Mathers as the primary villain, including him as a character named SRMD, using the abbreviation of Mathers's magickal name. Arthur Edward Waite appears as a villain named Arthwaite, and the unseen head of the Inner Circle of which SRMD was a member. "A.B." is theosophist Annie Besant. Among Crowl ...
