Mike Lindsay
Michael Robert Lindsay (2 November 1938 – 11 December 2019) was a British track and field athlete who competed in the discus throw and shot put disciplines. He represented Great Britain at the 1960 Summer Olympics and in the 1964 Summer Olympics. Biography Lindsay attended St Marylebone Grammar School. Lindsay became the British discus throw champion after winning the British AAA Championships title at the 1957 AAA Championships and the following year represented Scotland at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff. Lindsay regained the AAA discus title in 1959 and retained it in 1960 and shortly afterwards at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, he represented Great Britain in both the shot put and discus throw events. Lindsay remained one of Britain's leading throwers, not only in the shot put but also in the discus and became the British shot put champion after winning the British AAA title at the 1963 AAA Championships. The , officially the and commonly known as Tokyo 1964 (), were an international multi-sport event held from 10 to 24 October 1964 in Tokyo, Japan. Tokyo had been awarded the organization of the 1940 Summer Olympics, but this honor was subsequently passed to Helsinki due to Japan's invasion of China, before ultimately being cancelled due to World War II. Tokyo was chosen as the host city during the 55th IOC Session in West Germany on 26 May 1959. The 1964 Summer Games were the first Olympics held in Asia, and marked the first time South Africa was excluded for using its apartheid system in sports. British Empire And Commonwealth Games
The Commonwealth Games is a quadrennial international multi-sport event among athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations, which consists mostly, but not exclusively, of territories of the former British Empire. The event was first held in 1930 as the British Empire Games and, with the exception of 1942 and 1946 (which were cancelled due to World War II), has successively run every four years since. The event was called the British Empire Games from 1930 to 1950 (four editions), the British Empire and Commonwealth Games from 1954 to 1966 (four editions), and the British Commonwealth Games from 1970 to 1974 (two editions). Great Britain, represented by the British Olympic Association (BOA), competed at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Italy. 253 competitors, 206 men and 47 women, took part in 130 events in 17 sports. British athletes have competed in every Summer Olympic Games. The Rome Games continued Great Britain and Northern Ireland's disappointing run in the Olympics, with British athletes picking up only two gold medals (down from six in 1956). Overall, they won twenty medals, finishing twelfth. Shortly after the games, rumours circulated from several teams that the British team had fielded competitors in their women's Athletics team who had male characteristics. The allegations were instantly dismissed by the British team. The 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games (Welsh: ''Gemau Ymerodraeth Prydain a'r Gymanwlad'' 1958) were held in Cardiff, Wales, from 18 to 26 July 1958. It was the sixth edition of what would come to be known as the Commonwealth Games, the second Games held in the United Kingdom, and the second held under the name British Empire and Commonwealth Games.
