Middlewood is a north western suburb of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. The suburb falls within the Stannington (ward), Stannington ward of the City. Location Middlewood was formerly an entirely rural location, it has been partly encroached on by the expansion of the city of Sheffield since the 1960s. The exact area of the Middlewood district is not easy to determine, but is popularly thought to extend from the "Middlewood shops" at the top of Leppings Lane northwest for three km along the A6102 past Middlewood Hall to the outskirts of Oughtibridge. Between those two points it includes the land on the south western side of the River Don, South Yorkshire, River Don up to Worrall Road. Middlewood Hospital
Middlewood Hospital is a former psychiatric hospital situated between the suburbs of Middlewood, South Yorkshire, Middlewood and Wadsley in the City of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. It was also known as the South Yorkshire Asylum (1872–1888), the West Riding Asylum, Wadsley (1889–1929) and Wadsley Mental Hospital (1930–1948). It was one of four hospitals that made up The West Riding General Asylums Committee. It closed in 1996 and is now a private housing development called Wadsley Park Village. History Construction and expansion In 1866 the West Riding County Asylum at Wakefield had 1,130 beds and was suffering from overcrowding, having trebled in size in the previous 25 years. It was decided by the Hospital Committee to assign a subcommittee to find a suitable site in South Yorkshire for a second asylum. Poynton
Poynton is a town in the civil parish of Poynton-with-Worth, in the Cheshire East district and the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England; from 1974 to 2009 it was in Macclesfield district. It is located on the easternmost fringe of the Cheshire Plain, south-east of Manchester, north of Macclesfield and south of Stockport. The first mention of the manor of Poynton was in 1289. Coal was mined in Poynton from the 16th century and the collieries, under the ownership of the Lords Vernon from 1832 until their closure in 1935, were the largest in Cheshire. Consequent urbanisation and socioeconomic development necessitated better transport links; these came with the completion of the Macclesfield Canal through Poynton in 1831, the arrival of the Manchester and Birmingham Railway in 1845 and the Macclesfield, Bollington and Marple Railway in 1869. Middlewood Railway Station
Middlewood railway station serves the villages of High Lane in the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport, Greater Manchester, and Middlewood, near Poynton in the Cheshire East district of England. It is a stop on the Buxton Line between , and . The station is managed and served by Northern Trains; it is the last station on the line within the Transport for Greater Manchester ticketing area. There is no vehicular access to the station. Access is only by woodland paths, with the nearest road being some away. Middlewood Way
The Middlewood Way is a 10-mile (16 km) shared-use path in north-west England, between Macclesfield and Rose Hill, Marple; it was opened on 30 May 1985 by Dr David Bellamy. It serves the needs of walkers, dog walkers, cyclists, joggers and horse riders, playing host to a wide range of flora and fauna. The management of the length of the Middlewood Way is shared between Cheshire East Council's Countryside Ranger Service and Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council. Railway history The Middlewood Way follows the route of the former Macclesfield, Bollington and Marple railway, which had operated between 1869 and 1970. This section of railway connected Macclesfield and Rose Hill Marple, with trains continuing on to Manchester London Road.
