Michael Smeath
Air Vice-Marshal Michael John Smeath (born 2 October 1967) is a senior Royal Air Force officer. Education He was educated at the Open University (BSc), King's College London (MA) and Deakin University, Canberra. RAF career Smeath was commissioned into the RAF on 15 January 1989. He served as officer commanding No. 34 Squadron. He went on to be Station Commander at RAF Honington in 2014, Liaison Officer to the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee in July 2017 and Principal Staff Officer to the Chief of the Defence Staff in August 2018. In February 2020 Smeath was appointed Head of the British Defence Staff and Defence Attaché in Washington, D.C. with effect from August 2020. Royal Air Force
The Royal Air Force (RAF) is the United Kingdom's air and space force. It was formed towards the end of the First World War on 1 April 1918, becoming the first independent air force in the world, by regrouping the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS). Following the Allied victory over the Central Powers in 1918, the RAF emerged as the largest air force in the world at the time. Since its formation, the RAF has taken a significant role in British military history. The Commandant-General of the RAF Regiment (CG RAF Regt) is the Royal Air Force commander of the RAF Regiment. The post was established in January 1942 immediately prior to the creation of the RAF Regiment. The first two holders of the post were major-generals in the British Army. Air Vice-Marshal Gavin Douglas Anthony Parker, is a former senior Royal Air Force officer and was formerly the Head of the British Defence Staff and Defence Attaché in Washington, D.C. Early life and education Parker was born on 22 February 1969 in Harare, Zimbabwe (at the time called Salisbury, Rhodesia). He studied physics at the University of Newcastle, England, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in 1990. He later studied at King's College London, and graduated with a Master of Arts (MA) degree in defence studies in 2006. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. Air vice-marshal (AVM) is a two-star air officer rank which originated in and continues to be used by the Royal Air Force. The rank is also used by the air forces of many countries which have historical British influence and it is sometimes used as the English translation of an equivalent rank in countries which have a non-English air force-specific rank structure. Air vice-marshal is a two-star rank and has a NATO ranking code of OF-7. It is equivalent to a rear-admiral in the Royal Navy or a major-general in the British Army or the Royal Marines.
