Poole's Land was an eco-village and a countercultural intentional community in Tofino on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada, that existed between 1988 and 2020. Operated by founder Michael Poole, the community functioned as a popular tourist destination as well as a place of low-cost residence and accommodation, particularly for seasonal workers working over the summer months. Residents were encouraged to participate in a hippie lifestyle, living in camp-like conditions with an emphasis on sustainability and a community culture that espoused empathy as a core value and that was highly tolerant of soft drug use. Michael "Mike" Poole was a Canadian film maker and author. He began his career as a copy runner for the ''Vancouver Sun'' before becoming a reporter. He earned a journalism degree in the U.S. state of Virginia, started in the film business in the 1960s and went on to be a television producer for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation for ten years. He then worked as a freelance filmmaker, spending two decades producing documentaries with the well-known Canadian environmentalist, David Suzuki. His books are '' Romancing Mary Jane: A Year in the Life of a Failed Marijuana Grower'', ''Ragged Islands: A Journey by Canoe Through the Inside Passage'' and ''Rain Before Morning'', a novel about Canadian draft dodgers during World War I. Michael David Poole (born 23 April 1955) is an English retired football goalkeeper who played professionally in The Football League, North American Soccer League and Major Indoor Soccer League. Poole began his career with Rochdale A.F.C. In 1974, the team sent the nineteen-year-old Poole on loan with the Denver Dynamos of the North American Soccer League. In 1977, they Rochdale loaned him to the Portland Timbers of the NASL before selling him to the Timbers in 1978. Poole played for the Timbers from 1978 to 1980. Michael Garth Poole (born 27 November 1966) is a former international speedway rider from Australia. Speedway career Poole won a bronze medal at the Australian Championship in 2001 and won the Longtrack title the same year. He rode in the top tier of British Speedway from 1985 to 1994, riding for various clubs, but spent most of his time with Peterborough Panthers. In 1988, he helped the Peterborough win the Fours Championship during the 1988 National League season. In 1989, he helped the Peterborough win the Fours Championship again, during the 1989 National League season. He was part of the Peterborough team that completed the treble of league, knockout cup and fours during the 1992 British League Division Two season. Michael Poole (born 4 October 1984) is a British, Falkland Islands politician who served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Stanley constituency from 2013 to 2017. Poole was the first member of the Legislative Assembly to have been born after the Falklands War. Prior to his election Poole was a Senior Economist and Statistical Analyst in the Policy Unit of the Falkland Islands Government. He had previously worked as a manager in the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital in Stanley and was a representative of a fishing industry association.
