Megachile Incerta Male 1
The genus ''Megachile'' is a cosmopolitan distribution, cosmopolitan group of solitary bees, often called leafcutter bees or leafcutting bees; it also includes the resin bees and mortar bees. While other genus, genera within the family Megachilidae may chew leaves or petals into fragments to build their nests, certain species within ''Megachile'' neatly cut pieces of leaves or petals, hence their common name. This is one of the largest genera of bees, with more than 1500 species in over 50 subgenera. The alfalfa leafcutter bee (''Megachile rotundata'') is managed on a commercial scale for pollination management, crop pollination, and has been introduced by humans to various regions around the world. Ecology Nests are sometimes constructed within hollow twigs or other similarly constricted natural cavities, but often are in burrows in the ground. Nests are typically composed of single long columns of cells, the cells being sequentially constructed from the deepest portion of ... Synthetic Chemical
Chemical synthesis (chemical combination) is the artificial execution of chemical reactions to obtain one or several products. This occurs by physical and chemical manipulations usually involving one or more reactions. In modern laboratory uses, the process is reproducible and reliable. A chemical synthesis involves one or more compounds (known as ''reagents'' or ''reactants'') that will experience a transformation under certain conditions. Various reaction types can be applied to formulate a desired product. This requires mixing the compounds in a reaction vessel, such as a chemical reactor or a simple round-bottom flask. Many reactions require some form of processing (" work-up") or purification procedure to isolate the final product. The amount produced by chemical synthesis is known as the '' reaction yield''. Typically, yields are expressed as a mass in grams (in a laboratory setting) or as a percentage of the total theoretical quantity that could be produced based on t ... Megachile Texana
''Megachile texana'', the Texas leafcutter bee, is a species of bee in the family Megachilidae. It was first described by the American entomologist Ezra Townsend Cresson in 1878. It is native to the United States and southern Canada. Description The female ''Megachile texana'' is between long and the male between . The head and thorax are clad in short, dense whitish hair. The wings are semi-transparent with black veins. The abdomen is barred in black and yellowish-white. Biology The nests of ''Megachile texana'' often occur in pasture, with the entrance being under a rock, under a clod of earth or in one case, on a small hillock. The burrows may be up to long and the upper side is often the underside of a flat stone. Sometimes a pre-existing cavity is used, but females have been observed excavating their own nests. A single cell or several cells may be constructed, each lined with cut portions of leaf in a similar way to the nests of ''Megachile rubi''. Each cell is half-fille ... Megachile Rubi
''Megachile rubi'' is a species of leaf cutting bee in the family Megachilidae, found in the eastern United States. First described by Mitchell in 1924, it is placed in the subgenus ''Xeromegachile'', members of which are most often found in sandy areas and have distinct preferences in the petals and leaves they use in their nests. Description Females can be distinguished from related species by the fact that the 6th tergite (dorsal abdominal plate) has short, flattened downy hairs with no erect or semi-erect hairs. Males are distinguished by the 7th tergite being tipped with a spiny protuberance. Distribution and habitat ''Megachile rubi'' is native to the eastern part of the United States, its range extending from North Carolina to Florida. These bees are usually found in dry habitats such as sand dunes and areas of sandy scrub. Behaviour ''M. rubi'' is a solitary bee species and nests in holes in the ground. Holes are excavated by the female at an angle of 20° to 45° fro ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Western Leafcutting Bee
''Megachile perihirta'', commonly known as the Western leafcutting bee, is a bee in the genus ''Megachile''. The bee is native to western North America, ranging from Nebraska to Texas and Mexico, west to California, and north to British Columbia and Alberta, and often inhabits meadows and orchards. The bee is black with long whitish-yellow hair, more so below the thorax and abdomen. The abdomen, however, is mostly bare, although each segment has scattered whitish hair. The wings of the Western leafcutting bee are clear, while their veins are black. The pollen basket below the abdomen is bright red. Like most bees, adult western leafcutting bees drink nectar, whilst Western leafcutting bee larva A larva (; : larvae ) is a distinct juvenile form many animals undergo before metamorphosis into their next life stage. Megachile Fidelis
''Megachile fidelis'', the faithful leafcutting bee, is a species of bee in the family Megachilidae. This species is found in the western United States, where it ranges from Montana and South Dakota to New Mexico, west to California and north to Oregon, and often inhabits meadows and gardens. The bee is black, but covered by golden/yellow hair on its face, behind its eyes, on its thorax, below its wings (which are blackish) and on its legs. The pollen basket of the species is located under its abdomen. As often found with most bees, ''Megachile fidelis'' feeds on the nectar of flowers - particularly the nectar of composite flowers. The nests of ''M. fidelis'' are created in almost exactly the same fashion as, ''M. perihirta'', the Western Leafcutting Bee. However, adult bees do not leave their brood cells until all the cells between their cell and the end of the tunnel have been vacated. As with the case of many bees, larva grow extremely rapidly when in their brood cells. It is ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

''Megachile centuncularis'', commonly known as the patchwork leafcutter bee, is a species of bee in the family Megachilidae. It was first described by the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus in 1758. Description The Megachilidae are long-tongued, solitary bees, characterized by a rectangular labrum, the flap-like structure at the front of the mouth. They carry pollen on hairs on the underside of the abdomen. This species is about long and is largely black, the abdominal segments being fringed with golden hairs and the underside of the abdomen being clad with orange hairs. Distribution ''Megachile centuncularis'' is native to the northern hemisphere, being present in both North America and Eurasia. In western Europe, its range extends from Norway, Sweden and Finland southward to Spain and Italy. It occurs in eastern Ireland, and in Britain, especially in the southern part of the country. Distribution Native to Japan and China, it has been introduced to the Eastern United States and Ontario, Canada in recent times. First established in the United States during the early 1990s, records currently exist from most states east of the Mississippi River. In Europe, it was first observed close to Marseille's (France) port in 2008. Since then, this invasive species has also been recorded in the following European countries: Bosnia & Herzegovina, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, and Switzerland.
