Meenakshi Amma
Meenakshi Amma Gurukkal (born 1942) is an Indian martial artist known as a practitioner and teacher of Kalaripayattu, the traditional martial arts form of Kerala, India. In 2017, she received Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award. Biography Meenakshi Amma's family is from a Thiyya community in Vadakara Vatakara, also known as Vadakara () (formerly Badagara, ), is a municipality, taluk and a major town in the Kozhikode district in Indian state of Kerala. The municipality of Vatakara covers an area of and is bordered by Mahé to the north and ..., a town in northern Kerala. She was born at a time when physical education was compulsory. All the people in the area, regardless of gender, would go to Kalari (Kalarippayattu training centre) that day. Vadakara
Vatakara, also known as Vadakara () (formerly Badagara, ), is a municipality, taluk and a major town in the Kozhikode district in Indian state of Kerala. Kottackkal Kanaran Gurukkal
Kottackkal Kanaran Gurukkal (1850–1941), was a prominent Kalaripayattu Gurukkal (master) credited with the revival of Kalaripayattu following its decline due to the British ban on the martial art. Nearly 60% of existing Kalaris trace their lineage directly or indirectly to Kanaran Gurukkal. His significant role in preserving and revitalizing Kalaripayattu has earned him the title "Dronacharya of Kalaripayattu".He was born into the Chekavar Thiyyar Tharavad, a large Landlord family near Mukkali, Vadakara, Kozhikode. He remained unmarried and dedicated his entire life to the preservation and promotion of Kalaripayattu.
