Max Romeo
Maxwell Livingston Smith (22 November 1944 – 11 April 2025), known professionally as Max Romeo, was a Jamaican reggae and roots reggae recording musician who achieved chart success in his home country and in the United Kingdom. He had several hits with the vocal group the Emotions. His song "Wet Dream (Max Romeo song), Wet Dream" (1968) included overtly sexual lyrics and launched a new style of reggae. ''Revelation Time'' is an album by Max Romeo, released in 1975. It was re-released by United Artists Records in 1978 as ''Open the Iron Gate''. The album explored religious and social problems-oriented themes, and is regarded as Romeo's best album, along with ''War Ina Babylon''. Initially, it was available only in Jamaica, where it was re-released in 1977 as ''Warning Warning!'' with re-arranged track listing. The album saw its international release in 1978 as ''Open the Iron Gate'', again with altered running order. In 1999 an anthology '' Open the Iron Gate: 1973-77'' was released, consisting of the ''Revelation Time'' material and bonus tracks. Lee "Scratch" Perry (born Rainford Hugh Perry; 20 March 1936 – 29 August 2021) was a Jamaican record producer, songwriter and singer noted for his innovative studio techniques and production style. In Jamaican popular culture, a sound system is a group of disc jockeys, sound engineers and MCs playing music such as ska, rocksteady, reggae, dub reggae, dancehall and ragga. Sound systems are an important part of Jamaican culture and history, especially with the Windrush generation in Britain. Sound clashes involve crew members from opposing sound systems pitting their DJing and MCing skills against each other in venues or at festivals.
