Masala (1991 Film)
''Masala'' is a 1991 Canadian drama film starring, written, and directed by Srinivas Krishna. Plot Krishna is an orphan in Toronto whose parents and siblings were killed several years earlier in the Air India Flight 182 explosion while travelling back to India for a family visit, and who is now cleaning up his act after several years living on the streets as a drug addict and criminal. The film also stars Zohra Sehgal as his grandmother; Saeed Jaffrey in a triple role as his uncle Lallu, a postal worker named Hariprasad and the Hindu god Krishna; and Sakina Jaffrey as Rita, Hariprasad's daughter. Distribution The film premiered at the 1991 Toronto International Film Festival. Srinivas Krishna
Srinivas Krishna is an Indo-Canadian film and television director, most noted as the director, writer and lead actor of the 1991 film '' Masala''. Born in India, Krishna moved to Canada with his family in childhood. ''Masala'' premiered at the 1991 Toronto International Film Festival. The film, which drew on some the cinematic traditions of Bollywood rather than relying solely on the social realist conventions of Canadian film, has come to be recognized, alongside Deepa Mehta's contemporaneous '' Sam & Me'', as being the first major landmark films about the Indo-Canadian experience. Krishna followed up in 1996 with the film ''Lulu'', which premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival. ''The Daily News'' was a tabloid newspaper in Halifax, Nova Scotia, that was published from 1974 until ceasing operations in February 2008. The Genie Awards were given out annually by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television to recognize the best of Canadian cinema from 1980–2012. They succeeded the Canadian Film Awards (1949–1978), known as the "Etrog Awards" for sculptor Sorel Etrog, who designed its statuette. Genie Award candidates were selected from submissions made by the owners of Canadian films or their representatives, based on the criteria laid out in the ''Genie Rules and Regulations'' booklet which were distributed to Academy members and industry members. Peer-group juries, assembled from volunteer members of the Academy, met to watch the submissions and select a group of nominees. Academy members then voted on these nominations. ''Sam & Me'' is a 1991 Indo-Canadian drama film directed by Deepa Mehta (in her directorial debut) and written by Ranjit Chowdhry, who also stars in the film with Peter Boretski and Om Puri.
