Marnie Kennedy
Margaret "Marnie" Kennedy (1919 – 30 September 1985) was an Australian writer and domestic servant. Biography The daughter of Rosie Baker, of the Kalkatungu people, and an unknown white stockman, she was born on Coppermine Creek near Cloncurry, Queensland. She was sent with her mother to the Palm Island reserve when she was still young. At the age of 13, she was sent to Blue Range Station outside of Charters Towers, where she worked as a domestic. In 1936, she married Alwyn Kennedy, an Aboriginal stockman; the couple had two sons. They were granted an exemption from the Aboriginals Protection and Restriction of the Sale of Opium Act 1897. In 1944, she left her husband and moved to Ingham but returned to Blue Range later that year. She returned to Ingham with her new partner Sam, a white stockman, in 1948. In 1950, she moved with Sam to Mount Isa. She worked with Sam at Oban, Oxton Downs, Walgra and Carandotta sheep stations. She divorced her first husband in 1959. In 1972, ... Kalkatungu
The Kalkadoon (properly Kalkatungu) are descendants of an Indigenous Australian tribe living in the Mount Isa region of Queensland. Their forefather tribe has been called "the elite of the Aboriginal warriors of Queensland". In 1884 they were massacred at "Battle Mountain" by settlers and police. Language Kalkatung belonged to the Kalkatungic branch of the Pama-Nyungan language family, the other being Yalarnnga which was spoken to its south in the area of Djarra, in Queensland. Kalkatungu was spoken around Mount Isa, Queensland. Nothing is known of a third language Wakabunga sometimes thought to have had a genetic relation to the other two. Remnants of the language collected from the last native speakers by Barry Blake allowed the rudiments of the grammar and the language to be reconstructed. According to Robert M. W. The ''Aboriginals Protection and Restriction of the Sale of Opium Act 1897'', long name ''A Bill to make Provision for the better Protection and Care of the Aboriginal and Half-caste Inhabitants of the Colony, and to make more effectual Provision for Restricting the Sale and Distribution of Opium'', was an Act of the Parliament of Queensland. It was the first instrument of separate legal control over Aboriginal peoples, and was more restrictive than any contemporary legislation operating in other states. It also implemented the creation of Aboriginal reserves to control the dwelling places and movement of the people. Ingham is a rural town and locality in the Shire of Hinchinbrook, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Ingham had a population of 4,426 people.
