Mark Kinch
Mark Kinch (born 11 April 1963) is an English former runner who was a national fell running champion and represented his country at the World Mountain Running Trophy in the mid-1990s. As a youth, Kinch competed in the 3000m steeplechase but spent time away from the sport in his early twenties. On his return, he had some good but not outstanding results in cross country and road races. After being introduced to fell running and changing coaches to Tony Hulme, he began to have greater success. Fell Running
Fell running, also sometimes known as hill running, is the sport of running and racing, off-road, over upland country where the gradient climbed is a significant component of the difficulty. The name arises from the origins of the English sport on the fells of northern Britain, especially those in the Lake District. It has elements of trail running, cross country and mountain running, but is also distinct from those disciplines. Fell races are organised on the premise that contenders possess mountain navigation skills and carry adequate survival equipment as prescribed by the organiser. Fell running has common characteristics with cross-country running, but is distinguished by steeper gradients and upland country. Dale Head
Dale Head is a fell in the north-western sector of the Lake District, in northern England. It is 753 metres or 2,470 feet above sea level and stands immediately north of Honister Pass, the road between Borrowdale and Buttermere. Topography The North-Western Fells occupy the area between the rivers Derwent and Cocker, a broadly oval swathe of hilly country, elongated on a north-south axis. Two roads cross from east to west, dividing the fells into three convenient groups. Dale Head is the highest fell in the southern sector. Dale Head is the apex of two hill ridges. The principal ridge descends from Dale Head to the north-east and forms several other fells, each given a chapter by Alfred Wainwright in his Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells. European Mountain Running Championships
The European Mountain Running Championships is an annual international mountain running race. Inaugurated in 2002, it is organised by the European Athletic Association (EAA) in July each year. The venue for the championships is changed each year. The history of the competition lies in the European Mountain Running Trophy, which was first held in 1994 in Quantin, Belluno, Italy. It was officially sanctioned by the World Mountain Running Association in 1995 and continued until 2001, at which point the EAA introduced the official European Mountain Running Championships. Exclusively a senior championships until 2009, the competition now features separate senior and junior (under 20s) races for both men and women. Medals are awarded on an individual and national team basis. The World Mountain Running Championships (''World Mountain Running Trophy'' until 2008), is an international mountain running competition contested by athletes of the members of WMRA, World Mountain Running Association, the sport's global governing body. Snowdon Race
The Snowdon Race ( cy, Ras Yr Wyddfa) is a ten-mile endurance running competition in Gwynedd, from Llanberis to the peak of Snowdon. Contestants must make the five miles up the Llanberis Path to the summit ( above sea level) and return down. Currently entrants must be over-18 to compete in either the men's or women's race. In 2009 a junior race was incorporated. The race was first held in 1976 when Ken Jones from Llanberis put forward the idea to the village's Carnival Committee. 86 runners took part in the first race. In 2010, nearly 500 runners competed, with the nations represented including Scotland, Italy and Kenya. The men's course record stands at 1:02:29, set by Kenny Stuart in 1985.
