Peninsula Township is a civil township of Grand Traverse County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The township had a population of 6,068 at the 2020 census, an increase from 5,433 at the 2010 census. Peninsula Township is coterminous with the Old Mission Peninsula, which projects about north from its base in Traverse City into Grand Traverse Bay, an arm of Lake Michigan. The peninsula divides the Grand Traverse Bay into an East Arm and West Arm. The peninsula is well known for its cherry harvest and viticulture, and is included in the Old Mission Peninsula AVA, a federally recognized viticultural region. History The area was first settled in 1850, and for a time was known as Union Bench. It started as an agricultural extension of Springville. Legal action between residents of Springville and what became Mapleton, largely over water rights, allowed Mapleton to chart its course beginning in 1901 when the community incorporated as a town. Mapleton is a borough in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 441 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Juniata River, which is a tributary of the Susquehanna River. History Mapleton was founded when the Pennsylvania Railroad was extended to that point. The community was named for a grove of maple trees near the original town site. The H.O. Andrews Feed Mill was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. Mapleton is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Lane County, Oregon, United States. It is located on Oregon Route 126 and the Siuslaw River, west of Eugene and east of Florence. It is also the western terminus of Oregon Route 36. As of the 2000 census, Mapleton had a total population of 918. History Mapleton was likely named by Julia Ann "Grandma" Bean for the abundance of Bigleaf Maple trees in the area. Grandma Bean's husband was Obediah Roberts Bean, and their eldest child was judge Robert S. Bean. Pioneers of 1852, the Beans moved to the Mapleton area in 1886 and the town was named shortly thereafter. There was a post office called Seaton established north of the locality in 1885, and when it moved to the Mapleton area in 1889, Mrs. Bean became postmaster. Mapleton is a neighborhood in southern Brooklyn, New York City, bounded by 16th Avenue on the west, Dahill Road on the east, 57th Street on the north, and 65th Street on the south. It borders Bensonhurst and Borough Park to the west, and Midwood to the east. The area was originally developed in the 1910s, and was sometimes called "Mapleton Park". Mapleton is a hamlet in the town of Pendleton in Niagara County, New York, United States. Mapleton first appeared on maps in 1860 as Mapletown, but the name had been in use since at least the 1840s. A post office operated between 1850 and 1862 and again from 1889 until 1901, when Rural Free Delivery put it out of business. The Mapleton Presbyterian Church opened in 1847. That year, the Buffalo & Lockport Railroad was completed and a train station was established in Mapleton, and the community's nucleus shifted to the station. A fire nearly destroyed the hamlet on May 28, 1925, when Burt N. Thompson's barn became engulfed in flames.
