Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club (simply known as Sundowns) is a South African professional Association football, football club based in Mamelodi, Pretoria in the Gauteng province that plays in the South African Premiership, Premiership, the first tier of South African football league system. Founded in the 1970s, the team plays its home games in the Loftus Versfeld Stadium. They won the 2016 2016 CAF Champions League, CAF Champions League, 2017 2017 CAF Super Cup, CAF Super Cup and were voted the 2016 CAF Club of the Year. As of 2025, it is the most successful football club in the South African Premier Soccer League, PSL era with 15 league titles. Loftus Versfeld Stadium
Loftus Versfeld Stadium is a rugby stadium situated in the suburb of Arcadia, city of Pretoria in the Gauteng province of South Africa, owned by the Blue Bulls Rugby Union. The stadium can accommodate 51,762 spectators. The stadium is the home ground of the Bulls franchise of the United Rugby Championship, Blue Bulls union in South Africa's Currie Cup and African Football league champions Mamelodi Sundowns. It also hosted the 2009 Super 14 Final which the Bulls won 61–17 against the Waikato Chiefs, the 2009 Currie Cup final, which the Bulls won 36–24 against the Free State Cheetahs, and the 2024 United Rugby Championship final, which the Bulls lost 16–21 to the Glasgow Warriors. 2021 CAF Women's Champions League
The 2021 CAF Women's Champions League, known as the 2021 TotalEnergies CAF Women's Champions League for sponsorship purposes, was the inaugural edition of the annual African women's association football club tournament organized by CAF. It was held in Cairo, Egypt from 5 to 19 November 2021. Zola Mahobe
Daniel Zola Mahobe (1954 – 14 December 2013) was a South African businessman and former owner of Mamelodi Sundowns F.C. from 1985 to 1988. Mahobe played a pivotal role in transforming Mamelodi Sundowns into one of South Africa’s top professional football clubs. He was instrumental in the team’s rise to prominence during the 1980s, competing with the likes of Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs in the national league. 1983 NPSL First Division
The 1983 National Professional Soccer League was the sixth season of the multi-racial South African National Professional Soccer League (NPSL). The league was a merger of the previous NPSL, which due to the country's apartheid policies were for black teams only, and the National Football League, for white teams only. The other professional league, the non-racial Federation Professional League, continued to function independently. It was won by Durban City, managed by Clive Barker, who defended their title won in 1982. Changes Jomo Sono, after ending his playing career in the United States, purchased Highlands Park, naming the new club Dion Cosmos. Cape Town Spurs, Mamelodi Sundowns, Welkom Real Hearts and Ireland United were promoted. AmaZulu, Bloemfontein Celtic, Leicester City were relegated from the 1982 NPSL First Division. The National Football League (NFL) was the first professional association football league in South Africa, established in 1959. At first the NFL received stiff opposition from the SAFA, the amateur governing body which controlled the major football grounds in the county. The SAFA was a member of FIFA at the time. Initially, only two areas of South Africa were represented - Transvaal and Durban - but gradually the league became more geographically representative. The teams that joined the league in 1959 were-Transvaal (9 teams)-Rangers, Germiston Callies, Arcadia Shepherds, Benoni United, Randfontein, Pretoria City, Brakpan United, Johannesburg City & Southern Park. Bernard “Dancing Shoes” Hartze (born 5 March 1950 - dead 16 January 2024) is a South African retired professional footballer who played as a midfielder. He played in several leagues in South Africa and the United States. Early on, Hartze was given the nickname “Dancing Shoes” because of his deft dribbling skills and footwork. Youth Hartze was born in Marabastad section of Pretoria, South Africa in 1950 to a Dutch father and a South African mother. Marabastad
Marabastad (also called Asiatic Bazaar or Location) is a business area to the west of the city centre of Pretoria, South Africa. The original ''Maraba Village'', situated just to the south of the present Marabastad, was founded and ruled by the Ndebele Chief Maraba. The name ''Marabastad'' is the Afrikaans word meaning ''Maraba's Town''.
