Makarivka, Volnovakha Raion, Donetsk Oblast
Makarivka (, ) is a village in Volnovakha Raion, Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine. During the Russian invasion in 2022, the village was captured early in the war by Russian forces. Ukrainian forces retook it in June 2023 during their 2023 counteroffensive, but the settlement again fell to Russian forces in December 2024. Geography The village is on the left bank of the Mokri Yaly river, with the settlements of Blahodatne and Storozheve to the north, and Staromaiorske and Urozhaine to the south. Demographics According to the 2001 census, the village had a population of 258 people, of whom 82.56% said that their native language was Ukrainian and 17.44% Russian. 2023 Ukrainian Counteroffensive
In early June 2023, during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Ukraine launched a Counter-offensive, counteroffensive against Russian forces Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine, occupying its territory with a goal of breaching the front lines. Efforts were made in many directions, primarily in Donetsk Oblast, Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia oblast, Zaporizhzhia oblasts. In total, Ukraine recaptured 14 villages in Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts, with a total pre-war population of around 5,000. The counteroffensive was widely regarded as a crucial moment in the war. Hanna Vasylivna Maliar (; born ) is a Ukrainian lawyer and educator who served as one of the several Deputy Ministers of Defense under Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal from until 18 September 2023. A graduate of the International Institute of Linguistics and Law in Kyiv, she was a docent at the same institute before she began working for the state. Urozhaine, Donetsk Oblast
Urozhaine (, ; ; both ) is a rural settlement in Volnovakha Raion, Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine. It is situated on the opposite side of the Mokri Yaly river from the village of Staromaiorske. It belongs to the Velyka Novosilka settlement hromada. History On 17 July 2020, according to the resolution of the Verkhovna Rada "On the Formation and Liquidation of Districts", the village was included in the Velyka Novosilka settlement hromada, Volnovakha Raion. Staromaiorske
Staromaiorske ( ; ) is a village in Volnovakha Raion, Donetsk Oblast, eastern Ukraine. It is situated south of the village of Makarivka and on the opposite side of the Mokri Yaly river from the village of Urozhaine. The population at the 2001 census was 839. History The village was founded in the early 18th century as a Cossack settlement of the Zaporozhian Sich. Russo-Ukrainian War Russian invasion of Ukraine During the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the village was occupied by Russian forces for over a year. On 27 July 2023, the village was liberated by the 35th Marine Brigade and 7th Battalion Arei of the Ukrainian Volunteer Army of the 129th Kryvyi Rih Defense Brigade of the Territorial Defense Forces in the 2023 Ukrainian counteroffensive.
