Mahla Pearlman
Mahla Liane Pearlman (2 June 1937 – 2 December 2011) was an Australian lawyer and chief judge of the Land and Environment Court of New South Wales from 1992 to 2003. Early life and education Pearlman was born in Boggabri, New South Wales, the daughter of Minnie and Mark Pearlman. She attended Boggabri Public School with her younger brother Braham. She later attended MLC School in Burwood. She studied at the University of Sydney where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1957 and a Bachelor of Laws with Honours in 1960. Career Pearlman was admitted as a solicitor on 11 March 1960 and in 1981 became the first woman President of the Law Society of New South Wales. In 1989 she was the first woman President of the Law Council of Australia, a body that represents both solicitors and barristers. Australian Jews, or Jewish Australians, () are Jews who are Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia. In the 2021 census there were 99,956 people who identified Judaism as their religious affiliation and 29,113 Australians who identified as Jewish by ancestry, an increase from 97,355 and 25,716, respectively, from the 2016 census. The actual number is almost certainly higher, because being a Jew is not just about being religious, but the census data is based on religious affiliation, so secular Jews often feel it would be inaccurate to answer with "Judaism". Also, since the question is optional, many practising Holocaust survivors and Haredi Jews are believed to prefer not to disclose their religion in the census. Peter McClellan
Peter David McClellan is a retired judge of the New South Wales Court of Appeal who served between February 2013 and February 2018. McClellan was the Chief Royal Commissioner of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse from January 2013 to December 2017. He was previously the Chief Judge in Common Law in the Supreme Court, a position to which he was appointed in 2005. Early life and education McClellan grew up on Sydney's Upper North Shore, and received his secondary school education at Normanhurst Boys High School. Fellow Supreme Court Justice Ian Harrison (who also attended the school) said that, "that school was instrumental in assisting your Honour to overcome adolescent difficulties you had with low esteem, lack of confidence and self doubt". Centenary Medal
The Centenary Medal is an award which was created by the Australian Government in 2001. It was established to commemorate the centenary of the Federation of Australia and to recognise "people who made a contribution to Australian society or government". It was also awarded to centenarians, Australian citizens born on or before 31 December 1901 who lived to celebrate the centenary of federation on 1 January 2001. Nominations were assessed by a panel chaired by historian Geoffrey Blainey. Medal Design The obverse of the medal features a seven-pointed Commonwealth Star representing the six Australian states, with the seventh point representing Australia's territories. At the centre of the star is an Indigenous styling of Aboriginal traditions at the heart of the continent. Around the rim are 100 dots depicting 100 years of federation. Terry Sheahan
Terence William "Terry" Sheahan, (born 18 August 1947) is an Australian judge and former politician. He was the Labor member for Burrinjuck in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1973 to 1988, and held various ministerial portfolios (including Attorney General of New South Wales) between 1980 and 1988. On 9 April 1997 he was appointed to a judge on the New South Wales Land and Environment Court, and in 2019 retired from this role. He is the current patron of ADRA - Australian Dispute Resolution Association, a professional mediation association and accreditation body. Terry Sheahan was the only son of Bill Sheahan, who was also a member of the Legislative Assembly (1941–73).
