Macau Historic Archives
The Archives of Macao (; ) is a general archive in São Lázaro, Macau. It collects, processes, protects and make available records pertaining Macau. History The Archives of Macao was founded as Macao General Archives (Arquivo Geral de Macau; 澳門總檔案室) on 28 June 1952. In 1979, it was renamed as Historical Archives of Macao (Arquivo Histórico de Macau; 澳門歷史檔案室). In 2016, it was renamed to Archives of Macao. Architecture The archive is housed in a mansion with colonial style architecture. It was then restored by the Government of Macau. Collections The archive has more than 50,000 files, 70,000 photos and 10,000 publications. São Lázaro is the smallest civil parish () of Macau, located in the central-east region of the Macau Peninsula. It is surrounded by the parishes of Nossa Senhora de Fátima, Santo António, and Sé. History Of Macau
Macau is a special administrative region (SAR) of the People's Republic of China. It was leased to Portugal in 1557 as a trading post in exchange for a symbolic annual rent of 500 tael. Despite remaining under Chinese sovereignty and authority, the Portuguese came to consider and administer Macau as a '' de facto'' colony. Following the signing of the Treaty of Nanking between China and Britain in 1842, and the signing of treaties between China and foreign powers during the 1860s, establishing the benefit of "the most favoured nation" for them, the Portuguese attempted to conclude a similar treaty in 1862, but the Chinese refused, owing to a misunderstanding over the sovereignty of Macau. In 1887 the Portuguese finally managed to secure an agreement from China that Macau was Portuguese territory. In 1999 it was handed over to China. Archives In China
On the basis of the General Rules for Archives published in 1983, historical archives were being expanded at the provincial and county levels. Two of the most important archives were the First Historical Archives of China (FHAC), located in Beijing containing the archives of the Ming and Qing dynasties, and the Second Historical Archives of China (SHAC), located in Nanjing containing the archives of the Kuomintang period. And the Central Archives (the State Archives Administration) contains the archives of the Communist Party and the People's Republic. Macau Peninsula
The Macau Peninsula is the historical and most populous part of Macau. It has an area of () and is geographically connected to Guangdong Province at the northeast through an isthmus wide. The peninsula, together with downtown Zhuhai, sits on an island separated from the continent by distributaries of the Pearl River. The Border Gate (; ) was built on the northern isthmus.
