Luna Community College
Luna Community College is a public community college in Las Vegas, New Mexico. The college also has campuses in Mora, Springer and Santa Rosa. History The college was founded in 1969 as the result of a 1967 act of authorization by the New Mexico Legislature. Legislation to establish the school was sponsored by State Senator Ray Leger. The school was named "Luna Area Vocational Technical School" after Captain Maximiliano Luna, who was a Speaker of the New Mexico House of Representatives and a member of the Rough Riders. The name was changed in 2000 to Luna Community College. Mora, New Mexico
Mora or is a census-designated place in, and the county seat of, Mora County, New Mexico, Mora County, New Mexico. It is located about halfway between Las Vegas, New Mexico, Las Vegas and Taos, New Mexico, Taos on Highway 518, at an altitude of 7,180 feet. The Republic of Texas performed a semi-official raid on Mora in 1843. Two short battles of the Mexican–American War were fought in Mora in 1847, where United States, U.S. troops eventually defeated the Hispano and Puebloans, Puebloan militia, effectively ending the Taos Revolt in the Mora Valley. The latter battle destroyed most of the community, necessitating its re-establishment. Mora includes three plazas and four settlements: Mora proper, Cleveland (originally named San Antonio), Chacon, and Holman (without a plaza, and originally named Agua Negra) lying between Chacon and Cleveland. Springer, New Mexico
Springer is a town in Colfax County, New Mexico, United States. Its population was 1,047 at the 2010 census. History In 1877, William T Thornton, representing the Maxwell Land Grand and Railway Company commissioned Melvin Whitson Mills to "sell, locate, survey, map and plat, and lay out town site, no exceeding three hundred and twenty acres". Judge Mills selected a location along the Cimarron called Las Garzas and laid out the townsite and graded the streets. The Maxwell Land Grand and Railway Company conveyed the deed to Mills on 31 March 1880. The deed bequeathed the town Maxwell, but by 1883 according to the deed for the Mills Mansion, it was called Springer. The town was the county seat of Colfax County from 1882—1897 and keeps the former Courthouse as a museum. Santa Rosa is a city in and the county seat of Guadalupe County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 2,848 at the 2010 census. It lies between Albuquerque and Tucumcari, situated on the Pecos River at the intersection of Interstate 40 and U.S. Route 54 and 84. The city is located on the western edge of the Llano Estacado or "staked plains" of eastern New Mexico and west Texas. Ray Leger
Ray Leger (January 6, 1925 – October 14, 2009) was an American politician and educator who served as a member of the New Mexico Senate for the 8th district from 1973 to 1980. Early life and education Leger was born on January 6, 1925, in Las Vegas, New Mexico, the 11th of 14 children. After graduating from Las Vegas High School, Leger served in the United States Army during the end of World War II. He later earned a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education from New Mexico Highlands University. Career After earning his master's degree, Leger began working as an educator in Northern New Mexico. He later served as Superintendent of West Las Vegas Schools. Through a partnership with the United States Department of State, Leger worked as an educational advisor to the Costa Rica Ministry of Public Education. Rough Riders
The Rough Riders was a nickname given to the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry, one of three such regiments raised in 1898 for the Spanish–American War and the only one to see combat. The United States Army was small, understaffed, and disorganized in comparison to its status during the American Civil War roughly thirty years prior. Following the sinking of , President William McKinley needed to muster a strong ground force swiftly, which he did by calling for 125,000 volunteers to assist in the war. The U.S. had gone to war in opposition to Spanish colonial policies in Cuba, which was then torn by a rebellion. The regiment was also nicknamed "Wood's Weary Walkers" for its first commander, Colonel Leonard Wood.
