Lumberjack Steam Train
The Lumberjack Steam Train is a passenger excursion train operated on the Laona and Northern Railway, a heritage railroad located in Laona, Wisconsin and part of the Camp 5 Museum. It is operated by the non-profit Camp 5 Museum Foundation, Inc. The train runs from the outskirts of Laona to the museum site. The train consists of a steam locomotive, two steel passenger coaches, and three cabooses. The locomotive, named the "4-spot," is a 2-6-2 steam locomotive built in 1916 by the Vulcan Iron Works in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. It served as engine #12 on the Fairchild and North-Eastern Railway until it was leased in 1920 to the Wisconsin Central. The Laona and Northern bought it September 22, 1926 to haul timber from nearby logging camps to their mill in Laona. The Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway (DM&IR) , informally known as the Missabe Road, was a railroad operating in northern Minnesota and Wisconsin that used to haul iron ore and later taconite to the Great Lakes ports of Duluth and Two Harbors, Minnesota. Control of the railway was acquired on May 10, 2004, by the Canadian National Railway (CN) when it purchased the assets of Great Lakes Transportation. History The DM&IR was formed by the merger in 1937 of the Duluth, Missabe and Northern Railway (DM&N) and the Spirit Lake Transfer Railway. The following year, the Duluth and Iron Range Rail Road (D&IR) and Interstate Transfer Railway were added. All of these had been leased by the DM&N since 1930. The Soo Line Railroad is the primary United States railroad subsidiary of the Canadian Pacific Railway , one of seven U.S. Class I railroads, controlled through the Soo Line Corporation. Although it is named for the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railroad (MStP&SSM), which was commonly known as the Soo Line after the phonetic spelling of Sault, it was formed in 1961 by the consolidation of that company with two other CP subsidiaries: The Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic Railway, and the Wisconsin Central Railway. Wisconsin Central Railway (1897–1954)
The Wisconsin Central Railway Company was created in 1897 when the Wisconsin Central Railroad (1871–99) was reorganized from bankruptcy. In 1954, it reverted to the name Wisconsin Central Railroad Company. The railroad was merged into the Soo Line Railroad in 1961. History After a proposed merger with Northern Pacific Railway fell through in 1908, Wisconsin Central was leased by the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railroad, the "Old" Soo Line, in 1909. Controlling interest in the Soo Line, along with Wisconsin Central, was held by the Canadian Pacific Railway. Wisconsin Central entered receivership in 1932, declared bankruptcy in 1944, and finally re-emerged from administration in 1954 as the Wisconsin Central Railroad. Fairchild And North-Eastern Railway
The Fairchild and Northeastern Railroad was a common-carrier railroad organized in 1897, the successor road of several earlier logging lines of the N.C. Foster Lumber Company of Fairchild, Wisconsin. It originally connected Fairchild with Foster, via Hay Creek, in southern Eau Claire County. In 1913, the railroad was extended beyond Foster, via Allen as far as Cleghorn. To the east, it reached as far as Owen (where, as of 2006, the depot still stands and a short stub of trackage remains), via Willard and Greenwood. The railroad went defunct as a result of the Great Depression-induced change from grain farming to dairy farming as the mainstay of Wisconsin's agricultural base. A very small portion of this line was in use through the 1970s in Greenwood, where it connected with the since abandoned Greenwood branch of the Soo Line.
