Luis Silva (songwriter)
Luis Silva (November 5, 1943 – October 22, 2008) was a Tejano music songwriter, considered by music critics to have been one of the "most well-known and prolific songwriters in the history of Tejano music" and "one of the most influential and prolific songwriters and record label promoters in Tejano music history". Silva wrote two winning Tejano Music Awards for Song of the Year, won three consecutive times for Songwriter of the Year, and remains the most awarded songwriter for the Tejano Music Award for Single of the Year category. He is part of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), and his songwriting career spanned three decades and included a roster from Ram Herrera, Mazz, La Mafia, David Marez, among others. Tejano Music
Tejano music ( es, música tejana), also known as Tex-Mex music, is a popular music style fusing Mexican and US influences. Typically, Tejano combines Mexican Spanish vocal styles with dance rhythms from Czech and German genres – particularly polka or waltz. Tejano music is traditionally played by small groups featuring accordion and guitar or bajo sexto. Its evolution began in northern Mexico (a variation known as ). Freddie Records
Freddie Records is an American independent record label founded in Corpus Christi, Texas on November 1, 1969, by musician Freddie Martinez. Initially operating as a recording studio and distributor for Martinez, he expanded his roster to include other musicians of Tejano music in fear of his company folding if he no longer was commercially successful. The label began producing albums for Ramon Ayala, Agustin Ramirez, Oscar Martinez, and Joe Bravo. It became commonplace for albums produced by Freddie Records to appear on ''Billboard''s Latin albums chart in the state of Texas. Ayala became the company's top-selling act, allowing Freddie Records to be commercially viable throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In 1978, Freddie Records sponsored a concert at Cole Park in Corpus Christi to record Little Joe's ''Live for Schlitz'' album. Tejano Musicians
Tejanos (, ; singular: ''Tejano/a''; Spanish for "Texan", originally borrowed from the Caddo ''tayshas'') are the residents of the state of Texas who are culturally descended from the Mexican population of Tejas and Coahuila that lived in the region prior to it becoming what is now known as the state of Texas before it became a U.S. state in 1845. The term is also sometimes applied to all Texans of Mexican descent. The original word Tejano, with a "J" not an "X', comes from the indigenous Caddo people's language, from the word ''tayshas'', in which the word means "friend" or "ally", a title given to the indigenous population that moved northward by early Aztec and Spanish rulers and combined forces, including, but not limited to, the Lipan N'de Apache People, Coahuiltecas, and Huasteca indigenous people from Zacatecas.
