Lucía Gutiérrez
''Lucía'' is a 1968 Cuban black-and-white drama film directed by Humberto Solás, and written by Solás, Julio García Espinosa and Nelson Rodríguez. It was the winner of the Golden Prize and the Prix FIPRESCI at the 6th Moscow International Film Festival in 1969. The film is a period piece, told in three stories in different moments of Cuban history (the Cuban war of independence, the 1930s during the regime of Gerardo Machado and the 1960s), all as seen through the eyes of a different woman, each named Lucía. ''Lucia'' was digitally restored by the Cineteca di Bologna with funding from World Cinema Project and Turner Classic Movies and later screened at the Cannes Classics section of the 70th Cannes Film Festival in May 2017. The restoration also screened at the 55th New York Film Festival in the revivals section. Humberto Solás
Humberto Solás (4 December 1941 – 18 September 2008) was a Cuban film director, credited with directing the film ''Lucía'' (1968), which explored the lives of Cuban women during different periods in Cuban history. His cinematic style borrows from Luchino Visconti's mise en scene and is permeated by sometimes heavy melodrama. He started making shorts at a very young age and directed his first medium length film ''Manuela'' in 1967. The success of this film led him to direct ''Lucía'', told in three stories in different moments of Cuban history, all seen through the eyes of a different woman named Lucia. Solás won 13 awards for filmmaking and been nominated for an additional nine. His 1968 film ''Lucía'' won the Golden Prize and the Prix FIPRESCI at the 6th Moscow International Film Festival. Gerardo Machado
Gerardo Machado y Morales (28 September 1869 – 29 March 1939) was a general of the Cuban War of Independence and President of Cuba from 1925 to 1933. Machado entered the presidency with widespread popularity and support from the major political parties. However, his support declined over time. Many people objected to his running again for re-election in 1928, as his victory violated his promise to serve for only one term. As protests and rebellions became more strident, his administration curtailed free speech and used repressive police tactics against opponents. Ultimately, in 1933, Machado was forced to step down in favor of a provisional government headed by Carlos Manuel de Céspedes y Quesada and brokered by US ambassador Sumner Welles. 2017 Cannes Film Festival
The 70th Cannes Film Festival took place from 17 to 28 May 2017, in Cannes, France. Spanish film director and screenwriter Pedro Almodóvar was the President of the Jury for the festival and Italian actress Monica Bellucci hosted the opening and closing ceremonies. '' Ismael's Ghosts'', directed by French director Arnaud Desplechin, was the opening film for the festival. The festival celebrated its 70th edition. In late March 2017, the official poster of the festival was revealed featuring Italian actress Claudia Cardinale.
