Lizana, Mississippi
Lizana is an unincorporated community located in Harrison County, Mississippi. Lizana is approximately southwest of Saucier along Mississippi Highway 53. Lizana is part of the Gulfport-Biloxi metropolitan area. History According to Harrison County tax records, Lizana was settled by Henry Sabastian Lizana, from nearby DeLisle in the 1880s. The lumber boom in the area contributed to Lizana's success as an entrepreneur. Henry established a general store and post office near the logging railroad that once ran through the area. In the early 1920s, the logging industry declined. He deeded a small amount of his parcel of land to his nine children, and what remained was relinquished to the state due to unpaid taxes. In 1901, Father Rene Sorin, also from DeLisle, oversaw the building of the first Catholic mission in the area, St. Ann Catholic Church, on land donated by Henry. Mississippi Highway 53
Mississippi Highway 53 (MS 53) is a state highway in Mississippi. The highway starts at U.S. Highway 49 (US 49) in Gulfport and travels northwestward to MS 603 in Hancock County. The road then travels north to Poplarville, meeting Interstate 59 (I-59). MS 53 ends at MS 26 and US 11 in southwestern Poplarville. The road that became MS 53 has existed since 1928, and the highway was designated in 1950. The highway was completely paved by 1957, and an interchange was created at I-59 in 1967. Route description MS 53 is located in Harrison, Hancock, and Pearl River counties. The highway is legally defined in Mississippi Code § 65-3-3, as part of the state highway system. The Harrison County School District is a public school district based in Gulfport, Mississippi, United States. In addition to serving portions of Gulfport and Biloxi, the district also serves the city of D'Iberville, the communities of Lizana, Lyman, Pineville, Saucier and Woolmarket, as well as most of rural Harrison County. Lyman is a census-designated place (CDP) in Harrison County, Mississippi, United States. It is part of the Gulfport–Biloxi Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,277 at the 2010 census. History Lyman was once home to an express mail office, saw mill, and general store. Lyman is located on the Kansas City Southern Railway. The Gulf Coast Lumber Company and Ingram-Day Lumber Company were both located in Lyman. A post office operated under the name Lyman from 1901 to 1974. The United States Fish and Wildlife Service operated a fish hatchery in Lyman until 1973, when the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks took over operations of the fisheries station. DeLisle () is a census-designated place (CDP) in Harrison County, Mississippi, United States. It is part of the Gulfport– Biloxi Metropolitan Statistical Area.
