This is a list of rivers in East Timor. The list is arranged by drainage basin, catchment or drainage basin from west to east, with respective tributaries indented under each larger stream's name. Overview East Timor has over 100 rivers originating in the highlands and discharging into the coastal zone. As the island of Timor is small and the country's topography is steep, the rivers are short and drain quickly, with fast flowing Discharge (hydrology), discharges. A drainage divide trends approximately from southwest to northeast along East Timor's central mountain range; rain falling north of the divide flows northwards, and that falling to its south drains southwards. Loes River
The Loes River ( pt, Ribeira de Lois or , tet, Mota Lois) is a river in East Timor and one of the few perennial rivers in its north. It combines with its tributaries to make up the country's largest river system, and its catchment or drainage basin extends into the province of East Nusa Tenggara in Indonesia. The river and tributaries drain from the central mountains of Timor in a generally northeasterly direction into Ombai Strait. However, the river itself flows in a northwesterly direction, along the border between Bobonaro and Liquiçá municipalities in East Timor. North Laclo River
The North Laclo River ( pt, Ribeira de Lacló do Norte or , tet, Mota Lakló) is the longest river in East Timor. It flows northeast into Wetar Strait, reaching the coast near the city of Manatuto. It has no connection to the South Laclo, which flows into the Timor Sea. Etymology The river takes its name from the town of , which is located on its left bank, about from its mouth. English language sources conventionally refer to the river as the ''North Laclo River'', as there is also another Laclo River, usually referred to in English as the South Laclo River, which discharges into the Timor Sea on the south coast of East Timor. Timor Sea
The Timor Sea ( id, Laut Timor, pt, Mar de Timor, tet, Tasi Mane or ) is a relatively shallow sea bounded to the north by the island of Timor, to the east by the Arafura Sea, and to the south by Australia. The sea contains a number of reefs, uninhabited islands and significant hydrocarbon reserves. International disputes emerged after the reserves were discovered resulting in the signing of the Timor Sea Treaty. The Timor Sea was hit by the worst oil spill for 25 years in 2009. It is possible that Australia's first inhabitants crossed the Timor Sea from the Malay Archipelago at a time when sea levels were lower. It separates the island of Wetar from the eastern part of the island of Timor. The strait is also the eastern portion of a pair of international straits, the other one being Ombai Strait; the two straits combine to link the Indian Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. Etymology ''Wetar'' is the name of the Indonesian island on the other side of the strait's northern coastline.
