Afrikaans (, ) is a West Germanic language that evolved in the Dutch Cape Colony from the Dutch vernacular of Holland proper (i.e., the Hollandic dialect) used by Dutch, French, and German settlers and their enslaved people. Afrikaans gradually began to develop distinguishing characteristics during the course of the 18th century. Now spoken in South Africa, Namibia and (to a lesser extent) Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, estimates circa 2010 of the total number of Afrikaans speakers range between 15 and 23 million. Most linguists consider Afrikaans to be a partly creole language. An estimated 90 to 95% of the vocabulary is of Dutch origin with adopted words from other languages including German and the Khoisan languages of Southern Africa. Franschhoek
Franschhoek (; Afrikaans for "French Corner", Dutch spelling before 1947 ''Fransche Hoek'') is a small town in the Western Cape Province and one of the oldest towns in South Africa. Formerly known as Oliphants hoek (as there were vast groups of elephants roaming the valley). It is situated about 75 kilometres from Cape Town a 45 minute drive away. The whole area including townships such as Groendal and suburbs such as Wemmershoek has a population of slightly over 20,000 people while the town proper, known as Hugenote, has a population of around 1,000. Berg River Dam
The Berg River Dam is a high dam on the Berg River in South Africa. It is the centerpiece of the Berg Water Project (BWP) which is designed to capture the winter rainfall and store it for supply to Cape Town during the dry summer months. The project in turn forms an important part of the Western Cape Water Supply System (WCWSS), an intricate system of dams and bulk water infrastructure that provides water to more than 3 million people. At the inauguration of the dam in 2009, then President of South Africa Kgalema Motlanthe called the project "a good example of how public infrastructure projects can be used to contribute meaningfully to poverty eradication and to foster social empowerment of the people." De Beer's Pass (van Reenen)
De Beer's Pass is located in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. It is situated on an unmarked road between Ladysmith and Harrismith (labelled as S61 on Google Maps) in the neighbouring Free State province. This pass should not be confused with another pass of the same name located in South Africa's Eastern Cape province. N3 realignment A proposal has been made to reroute the nearby N3 national road over De Beer's Pass. The proposed new alignment would shorten the route between Durban and Johannesburg by and have a more gentle gradient (easier route for trucks) than the existing Van Reenen's Pass. The Ingula Pumped Storage Scheme (previously named Braamhoek) is a pumped-storage power station in the escarpment of the Little Drakensberg range straddling the border of the KwaZulu-Natal and Free State provinces, South Africa. It is about North-East of Van Reenen. Design The pumped-storage hydroelectric scheme consists of an upper and a lower dam apart and connected to a power station by tunnels. The power station uses 4 Francis pump turbines rated at 333 MW each, giving it a total rating of 1332 MW installed capacity. Groot River (Eastern Cape)
The Groot River is a river in the southern area of the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. It is a right hand tributary of the Gamtoos River. This river passes through Steytlerville. Course The Groot River originates at a point where the Kariega River and the Sout River meet, although they enter the Beervlei Dam as the Sout River. Beyond the dam, the river becomes the Groot River, running southeast. Near the town of Steytlerville it turns slightly southwards before heading eastward again, lastly bending southwards before it joins the Kouga River to form the Gamtoos at the confluence. Eastern Cape
The Eastern Cape is one of the provinces of South Africa. Its capital is Bhisho, but its two largest cities are East London and Gqeberha. Beervlei Dam
Beervlei Dam is a dam in the Groot River, Eastern Cape, South Africa. It was established in 1957, has a capacity of , and a surface area of , and the dam wall is 31 m high. The main purpose of the dam is to provide flood absorption. The Karoo sediments in the area contain a lot of salts and it has been found that lengthy storage of water results in high water salinity. Any flood water is used as quickly as possible by the downstream irrigators and the reservoir is kept empty for extended periods.
