This is a list of U.S. states and territories by economic growth rate. This article includes a list of the 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and the 5 inhabited U.S. territories sorted by economic growth — the percentage change in real GDP for the first quarter of 2019 is listed (for the 50 states and District of Columbia), using the most recent data available from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. The most recent data for American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands is from 2018. Within the 50 states and District of Columbia, West Virginia had the largest GDP growth rate ( 5.2%) in the First Quarter 2019, while Hawaii had the smallest growth rate ( 1.2%). Economic Growth
Economic growth can be defined as the increase or improvement in the inflation-adjusted market value of the goods and services produced by an economy in a financial year. Statisticians conventionally measure such growth as the percent rate of increase in the real gross domestic product, or real GDP. Growth is usually calculated in real terms – i.e., inflation-adjusted terms – to eliminate the distorting effect of inflation on the prices of goods produced. Measurement of economic growth uses national income accounting.
