The Mayor of Kansas City, Missouri is the highest official in the Kansas City, Missouri Municipal Government. Since the 1920s the city has had a council-manager government in which a city manager runs most of the day-to-day operations of the city. Unlike most cities of its size, by charter Kansas City has a "weak-mayor" system, in which most of the power is formally vested in the city council. However, the mayor is very influential in drafting and guiding public policy. The mayor presides over all city council meetings and has a casting vote on the council. Due to these combined factors the mayor, in fact, holds a significant amount of de facto power in the city government. Since 1946 mayors of Kansas City are elected by the voters of Kansas City to four-year terms, and are limited to two terms under the city's charter. Quinton Donald Lucas (born August 19, 1984) is an American politician serving as the 55th mayor of Kansas City, Missouri. He was elected in 2019. He is affiliated with the Democratic party and is the city's third African-American mayor. Before his election, he was a law school professor, community leader, and city council member. Patrick Shannon (1824 – December 16, 1871) was the 8th mayor of Kansas City, Missouri, serving from 1864 to 1866. Biography Shannon was born in 1824 in County Cavan, Ireland. He immigrated to Kansas City in 1855, where he operated a dry goods business at Main and Front Streets. He was elected to the city council in 1861. During the American Civil War, he joined the Confederates and rose from private to major. He was elected to the council again in 1864 and became mayor of Kansas City in 1865. William Bonnifield
William Bonnifield (September 14, 1814 – November 18, 1875), also known as William Bounifield and William Bonnefield, was the Mayor of Kansas City, Missouri, elected in 1863, during the American Civil War. However, most of the City Council had sided with the South and cut off Bonnifield’s pay. He held office for one month, after which he resigned and moved to Denver, Colorado. Biography William was born on September 14, 1814 in Randolph County, Virginia, the second son of Rhodham and Sarah Nancy (Minear) Bonnifield. John Johnson (Missouri)
John Johnson (1816–1903) was an architect who designed the original Coates House in Kansas City, Missouri, which subsequently became the hotel that is on the National Register of Historic Places, and was partially destroyed in 1978 in Kansas City's worst hotel fire, which took the lives of 20 individuals. He also served as the 3rd mayor of Kansas City, Missouri. Johnson was born in England and moved to New York City in the 1840s and then to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He moved to Kansas City in 1852 where he platted portions of the soon to be incorporated community of Kansas. He designed Kansas City's first City Hall at 4th and Main (a two-story brick building that included the police department and jail on the first floor).
