The Municipality of Cerknica (; sl, Občina Cerknica) is a municipality in the Karst region of southwestern Slovenia, with a population of 11,350 in 2012. The seat of the municipality is the town of Cerknica. It belongs to the traditional region of Inner Carniola. The best-known landmark of the municipality is Lake Cerknica, an intermittent lake and the largest lake in Slovenia, south of the town of Cerknica. The Littoral–Inner Carniola Statistical Region ( sl, Primorsko-notranjska statistična regija) is a statistical region in southwest Slovenia. Until January 1, 2015 it was named the Inner Carniola–Karst Statistical Region ( sl, Notranjsko-kraška statistična regija). The karst terrain, with Postojna Cave and intermittent Lake Cerknica, is the most important natural feature of this statistical region.
