Leona Vidal Roberts
Leona Lucila Vidal Roberts (born 1972) is a Falkland Islands curator, radio broadcaster and politician who has served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Stanley constituency since the 2017 general election. She previously served as Director and Manager of the Falkland Islands Museum and National Trust. Roberts was born in Punta Arenas, Chile to Nelson Vidal and Eileen Biggs (a fifth generation Falkland Islander). The family moved to the Falklands when she was three. After attending Stanley Senior School, Roberts went to the United Kingdom to study Journalistic Law at Stradbroke College in Sheffield, where she met her husband. In 1989 Roberts became an Assistant Editor at ''Penguin News'' in Stanley and then in 1994 she moved to the Government Printing Office. Stanley Senior School
Education in the Falkland Islands is free and compulsory up to the end of the academic year when a child reaches 16 years of age. The Falklands follows the English education system. Primary and secondary education There are two schools in Stanley, the capital and only substantial settlement. The Infant and Junior School teaches ages 4 to 11 and the Falkland Islands Community School caters for ages 11 to 16. Other rural pupils are taught by travelling teachers. Older children can board in a hostel in Stanley so they can attend school there. All teachers are trained in the UK or other English-speaking countries. There is also a primary school at RAF Mount Pleasant that mainly serves the children of members of the British armed forces. Chileans ( es, Chilenos) are people identified with the country of Chile, whose connection may be residential, legal, historical, ethnic, or cultural. Falkland Islands Radio Service
Falkland Islands Radio Service is an independent radio broadcaster in the Falkland Islands. The station broadcasts for 76 hours each week and provides a wide range of programming including all music genres, local news and phone-in shows. The station has five full-time staff members, approximately 15 part-time presenters and volunteers from the community contribute to some programming. Although officially called "Falkland Islands Radio Service" the station ident is "Falklands Radio" and it is often referred to as "FIRS". Stanley, Falkland Islands
Stanley (; also known as Port Stanley) is the capital city of the Falkland Islands. It is located on the island of East Falkland, on a north-facing slope in one of the wettest parts of the islands. At the 2016 census, the city had a population of 2,460. The entire population of the Falkland Islands was 3,398 on Census Day on 9 October 2016. Stanley is represented by five of the eight elected members of the Legislative Assembly of the Falkland Islands, Stacy Bragger, Barry Elsby, Mark Pollard, Roger Spink and Leona Vidal Roberts. ''Penguin News'' is the only newspaper produced in the Falkland Islands. It is published every Friday and provides news and features about the islands. History The paper was founded as a monthly in 1979, and after the Falkland Islands War it became a fortnightly paper and then eventually a weekly paper. It was sold to fishing company Seamount Ltd in 1988 in the hopes of saving the newspaper, but after Seamount's bankruptcy the Falkland Islands Government took control of Seamount's assets, and legislation was passed for the Media Trust to guarantee the independence of the paper. Editions from 1979 to date are published online by the Falklands Government Archives.
