Leo Jung
Rabbi Leo Jung (June 20, 1892 in Uherský Brod, Moravia – December 19, 1987 in New York City, United States) was one of the major architects of American Orthodox Judaism. He was the indirect progenitor of the religious day school system common throughout North American Jewish communities, He was also a major fundraiser and activist for many Jewish causes worldwide, in the periods before, during and after the Holocaust. Background and education His father, Meir Tzvi Jung held rabbinic post in Mannheim then was elected rabbi of Uherský Brod in 1890. The elder Jung believed in the '' Torah im Derekh Eretz'' (Torah combined with worldly activity) philosophy of Samson Raphael Hirsch. Later he moved to London. Jung's father founded schools in Uherský Brod, Cracow and London, where both religious and secular learning took place. In London, Meir Tzvi was a leader in Agudat Yisrael, and the Sinai Movement. Uherský Brod
Uherský Brod (; german: Ungarisch Brod) is a town in Uherské Hradiště District in the Zlín Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 16,000 inhabitants. The historic town centre is well preserved and is protected by law as an urban monument zone. Torah Umesorah
The Torah (; hbo, ''Tōrā'', "Instruction", "Teaching" or "Law") is the compilation of the first five books of the Hebrew Bible, namely the books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. Manhattan Day School, often referred to as MDS, is a co-educational Modern Orthodox Jewish yeshiva elementary school located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. It was founded in 1943 as Yeshivat Ohr Torah Community School, the first Jewish all-day independent school on the West Side of Manhattan. The Jewish Center is a Modern Orthodox synagogue on New York City's Upper West Side. History The synagogue was founded in 1918 by prosperous Jews moving into the Upper West Side of Manhattan, a neighborhood that was just being built along the new IRT subway line. The large synagogue is in a tall Neo-Classical building at 131 West 86th Street that contains a large number of social halls, classrooms, auditoriums and offices in addition to the Neo-Classical main sanctuary. The synagogue was the first in America to be built not only to serve as spiritual home to its members, but also as a cultural, social and recreational home. Irma Rothschild Jung
Irma Rothschild Jung (1897-1993) was an American community activist. Born in Germany, Jung dedicated her life to Jewish communal programs for the poor, needy, and persecuted, both in Europe and the United States. Early life Jung was born on July 1, 1897, in the village of Randegg, located in Baden, Germany near the Swiss border. Her family were wealthy observant Jews of Swiss-Jewish descent and she was one of twelve siblings. She received her education in Switzerland at the University of Zurich from 1917 to 1919. Following her education, she took an interest in the plight of Eastern European Jews. She married Moravian-born Rabbi Leo Jung on February 28, 1922. Irma and Leo met at Stansstad on Lake Lucerne at a camp she ran for refugee children. Mikveh or mikvah (,  ''mikva'ot'', ''mikvoth'', ''mikvot'', or (Yiddish) ''mikves'', lit., "a collection") is a bath used for the purpose of ritual immersion in Judaism to achieve ritual purity.
