Latvian Basketball Association
The Latvian Basketball Association ( Latvian: ''Latvijas Basketbola Savienība''), also known as LBS, is the national governing body of basketball in Latvia. It was founded in 1923 and was one of the FIBA Europe co-founders, but due to the Soviet and Nazi occupations, the federation disappeared from FIBA from 1940 to 1991. Its headquarters are located in Riga. Tournaments organized Latvian Basketball Association is recognized as one of the best international tournament organizers for FIBA. Latvia has organized EuroBasket 1937, EuroBasket Women 2009, EuroBasket 2015, EuroBasket Women 2019 and will organize EuroBasket 2025. Also, Latvia has been a host for 2011 FIBA Under-19 World Championship, 2021 FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup and a number of other youth competitions in all age groups. Basketball
Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, most commonly of five players each, opposing one another on a rectangular court, compete with the primary objective of shooting a basketball (approximately in diameter) through the defender's hoop (a basket in diameter mounted high to a backboard at each end of the court, while preventing the opposing team from shooting through their own hoop. A field goal is worth two points, unless made from behind the three-point line, when it is worth three. After a foul, timed play stops and the player fouled or designated to shoot a technical foul is given one, two or three one-point free throws. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins, but if regulation play expires with the score tied, an additional period of play (overtime) is mandated. Latvian-Estonian Basketball League
The Latvian-Estonian Basketball League is the highest professional men's club basketball league in Latvia and Estonia; it has been organised since 2018, run by the Latvian Basketball Association and the Estonian Basketball Association. History The league was established in 2018 when the Latvijas Basketbola līga (LBL) and Korvpalli Meistriliiga (KML) merged. In its inaugural season, 15 teams participated in the league. After a Final Four is played to determine the winner of the league, there are playoffs to decide the national champions of Latvia and Estonia. The first game was on 28 September 2018, with Estonian champions Kalev/Cramo hosting a game against the Latvian champions Ventspils. On 9 April 2019, Ventspils won the first league championship. Latvian Basketball Cup ( Latvian: Latvijas kauss basketbolā), for sponsorship reasons known as Latvijas Basketbola Užavas kauss, is an annual national domestic basketball cup competition in Latvia. It is organised by the Latvian Basketball Association. After 26 years long absence, it was restored in 2020. However, due to COVID-19 pandemic the first season was cancelled. In the season 2021-22 the cup was finally played, and BK VEF Rīga won it for the first time. History Latvian Basketball Cup was first organized since 1948 to 1952 and since 1960 to 1994. After former Latvia NT player Kristaps Janičenoks became the director of Latvian Basketball League, he restored the competition in 2020.
