Las Palmas Handicap
The Goldikova Stakes is a Grade II American Thoroughbred horse race for fillies and mares age three years old or older over the distance of one mile on the turf scheduled annually in November at Santa Anita Park, Arcadia, California. The event currently carries a purse of $200,000. History The event was inaugurated on 13 October 1969 as the Las Palmas Handicap at the Oak Tree Racing Association meeting at Santa Anita Park over a distance of miles on the dirt and was won easily by the 9/5 favourite Manta with a margin of five lengths. The Las Palmas Handicap was named for the California-bred racing mare, Las Palmas. Foaled in 1929, she won the first ever race at the modern Santa Anita Park on Tuesday, 25 December 1934. Breeders' Cup Mile
The Breeders' Cup Mile is a Grade 1 Weight for Age stakes race for thoroughbred racehorses three years old and up, run on a grass course. It has been conducted annually as part of the Breeders' Cup World Championships since the event's inception in 1984. All Breeders' Cups to date have been held in the United States except for the 1996 event in Canada. The purse was raised from $1.5 million US to $2 million in 2007. Freddy Head has won this race twice as a jockey and three times as a trainer. There is no official stakes record for the Breeders' Cup Mile as it is run on different racecourses each year, some of which are significantly faster than others. Umberto Rispoli (born 31 August 1988 in San Severino Marche, Italy) is a horse racing jockey. He commenced his apprenticeship in 2005 and graduated to the senior ranks in 2010. He was a member of the Hong Kong Jockey Club until December 2019 when he moved his tack to Southern California. As of July 2022, Rispoli has accrued over $21 million in purses and won 297 races. Early life Rispoli was born 31 August 1988 in San Severino Marche, Italy, but his family is originally from Napoli.
