La Vallée-de-Jacmel
La Vallée (; ht, Lavale) is a commune in the Jacmel Arrondissement, in the Sud-Est department of Haiti. It has 36,188 inhabitants. Geography Situated between the communes of Jacmel et Bainet. The name La Vallée de Jacmel could translate as "The Valley of Jacmel" but it is located 800 meters above sea level. Demography As of March 2009 La Vallée had 36,188 inhabitants. The small urbanized area of Ridoré had 1039 people with 239 households, roughly about 3.13% of the total population. The area's population has a slightly higher than average mixed-race population. It is believed descended from French colonists and Polish Haitians, descendants of Polish soldiers who ended up siding with former slaves in the Haitians Revolution. Les Cayes
Les Cayes ( , ), often referred to as Aux Cayes (; ht, Okay), is a commune and seaport in the Les Cayes Arrondissement, in the Sud department of Haiti, with a population of 71,236. Due to its isolation from the political turmoil of the capital, Port-au-Prince, it is one of Haiti's major ports, with export trade concentrating on mostly coffee and sugarcane. Chibly Langlois (; born 29 November 1958) is a Haitian cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He is bishop of Les Cayes since 15 August 2011, and president of Haiti’s Bishops’ Conference. Pope Francis, on 22 February 2014, elevated Langlois to the College of Cardinals. Langlois is the first Haitian cardinal. He is the only one among the new cardinals at the February 2014 consistory who was not an archbishop. Biography Langlois was born in 1958 in La Vallée in southeast Haiti to a poor family. Polish Haitians ( ht, Poloné or ''La Pologne'') are Haitian people of Polish ancestry dating to the early 19th century; a few may be Poles of more recent native birth who have gained Haitian citizenship.
