La Tablada
La Tablada is a city in Argentina. It is located in La Matanza Partido and is part of the Greater Buenos Aires metro area. Overview La Tablada initially developed around the Buenos Aires Western Railway ( es, Ferrocarril Oeste de Buenos Aires) station inaugurated in 1900. The station, located on the 28 km (18 mi) marker along the Haedo—La Plata line, primarily served the wholesale market established nearby in 1901, and in 1909, the settlement's first homestead lots were sold. Most of the settlement's 1,500 early homeowners worked in the wholesale market, which was closely tied to the Liniers cattle market just north of La Tablada, and numerous meat packing plants opened in the town during the 1910s and 1920s. Provincial electricity services and the town's first clinic were established in 1925. 1989 Attack On La Tablada Regiment
The 1989 attack on La Tablada barracks was an assault on the military barracks located in La Tablada, in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, by 40 members of ''Movimiento Todos por la Patria'' (MTP), commanded by former ERP leader Enrique Gorriarán Merlo. 39 people were killed and 60 injured by the time the Argentine army retook the barracks. The MTP carried out the assault under the alleged pretense of preventing a military coup supposedly planned for the end of January 1989 by the ''Carapintadas'', a group of far-right military officers who opposed the investigations and trials concerning Argentina's last civil-military dictatorship (1976-1983). The Argentine president of the time, Raúl Alfonsín declared that the attack, which carried the ultimate goal of sparking a massive popular uprising, could have led to a civil war. Liniers
Liniers is a barrio (neighborhood) of Buenos Aires on the edge of the city, centered on Rivadavia Avenue. It is also an important train station and bus hub, connecting western Gran Buenos Aires with the Buenos Aires Metro. La Tablada Israelite Cemetery
The La Tablada Israelite Cemetery ( es, Cementerio Israelita de La Tablada), also known simply as the La Tablada Cemetery, is a Jewish cemetery located in the city of La Tablada, in the Greater Buenos Aires conurbation of Argentina. It was established in 1936 and is operated by the Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina (AMIA). Housing over 150,000 graves, it is the largest Jewish cemetery in Latin America. The Movimiento Todos por la Patria (MTP) was an Argentine guerrilla movement active from 1986 to 1989, whose leader was Enrique Gorriarán Merlo. He was responsible for carrying out the 1989 attack on La Tablada Army Regiment. Background By the time the group was founded, Merlo had been active in radical activities for years; he fought with the People's Revolutionary Army (ERP) in the 1970s.
