Luke Montebello
Luke Montebello (born 13 August 1995) is a Maltese professional footballer currently playing for Maltese Premier League side Ħamrun Spartans, where he plays as a forward. Club career Having played his youth football for the Birkirkara nursery, Montebello joined Livorno's youth sector in 2011. He had some success with the Italian youth side, before returning to Malta and signing with Valletta on a five-year contract. Montebello was sent out on loan to Żebbuġ Rangers for the second half of the 2014–15 season in a bid to help them avoid relegation. In search of first team football, he joined Tarxien Rainbows in summer 2015 on loan, scoring 12 goals in 31 matches in the Maltese Premier League. He was again sent out on loan for the 2016–17 season, this time to woodenspoonists Pembroke Athleta. Pietà, Malta
Pietà ( mt, Tal-Pietà) is a small town in the Central Region of Malta, located near the outskirts of the capital city Valletta. Pietà is the suburb next-closest to the capital after Floriana. Its name is derived from Italian and signifies "Mercy." Etymology The name of Pietà in Italian means Mercy. Description Malta's former national hospital, St. Luke's, is located in Tal-Pietà. Tal-Pietà is a coastal town, and an old boathouse of notable historic interest (now in use as a restaurant) is located on the waterfront. The town is named after a Church of Our Lady of Sorrows dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries which is still in active use today. A couple of streets nearby bear the names of St. Augustine and his mother, St. Monica. Tal-Pietà was a departure point for the Gozo ferry before the construction of a yacht marina. Silvio Vella
Silvio Vella (born 8 February 1967) is a former professional footballer who played for Rabat Ajax and Hibernians as a defender. Born in Canada, he played for the Malta national team. Career Born in Canada, Vella has dual nationality, Maltese and Canadian. His family moved to Malta in 1970. He started playing football with Rabat Ajax and when he was promoted to the senior team, he soon became an invaluable asset, and rarely missed a game. Silvio Vella was chosen as Malta's Footballer of the Year in the 1993–94 season, in spite of Rabat Ajax' relegation as the first (and to date only) player from a relegated team to win that award. This was at the height of his career, and to keep on playing in the Premier Division he joined Hibernians. 2023–24 Maltese Premier League
The 2023–24 Maltese Premier League is the 109th season of top-flight league football in Malta. The season began on 15 September 2023 and will end in April 2024. The season saw the relegation of Valletta, one of the most historic teams in Maltese football, for the first time in their history. Teams The league consisted of fourteen teams; the top twelve teams from the previous season, and two teams promoted from the 2022–23 Maltese Challenge League. Ħamrun Spartans entered the season as defending champions. Sliema Wanderers and Naxxar Lions were promoted and returned to the Maltese Premier League after one and five years of absence, respectively. The 2022–23 Maltese Premier League is the 108th season of top-flight league football in Malta. The season began on the 20th August 2022 and will end between April and May 2023. Hibernians are the defending champions, having won their 13th title the previous season. Format For this season the Malta Football Association decided to expand the league to 14 teams starting with this season. Teams Fourteen teams will compete in the league – the top ten teams from the previous season and the four teams promoted from the Maltese Challenge League. The promoted teams are Żebbuġ Rangers, Marsaxlokk, and Pietà Hotspurs, who will return after an absence of five, seven, ten and eight years from the top flight respectively. The 2013–14 Maltese FA Trophy was the 76th season since its establishment. For the second season, the competition included all teams from Malta and Gozo. The competition began on 1 September 2013 and ended on 4 May 2014 with the final in Ta' Qali Stadium. The defending champions were Hibernians, having won their 10th Maltese Cup last season, but were eliminated by Pietà Hotspurs in the fourth round. Valletta were crowned winners after defeating Sliema Wanderers 1–0 in the final, therefore qualifying for the first qualifying round of the 2014–15 UEFA Europa League. Maltese FA Trophy
The FA Trophy, currently known as the IZIBET FA Trophy for sponsorship reasons, is an annual football cup competition that takes place in Malta. The cup was founded in 1933; following a match between England and Italy, played in Rome in May 1933, to where a number of pro-British Maltese supporters travelled to support the English side. The Football Association as recognition donated a silver trophy to be played on the model of the FA Cup. The team who wins the cup, wins a place in the First qualifying round of the UEFA Europa Conference League. This competition is now played on a knock-out basis between all the senior clubs in the Maltese and Gozitan football pyramids. The 2015–16 Maltese Premier League was the 101st season of the Maltese Premier League. The season began on 21 August 2015 and concluded on 30 April 2016. Hibernians were the defending champions, having won their 11th title the previous season. The Maltese Premier League consisted of three rounds, for a total of 33 matches per team, with the first two rounds played between 21 August 2015 and 14 February 2016, and the third and final round played from 20 February to 30 April 2016. The 2013–14 Maltese Premier League was the 99th season of the Maltese Premier League, the top-tier football league in Malta. It began on 16 August 2013 and ended on 26 April 2014. Birkirkara are the defending champions, having won their 4th title the previous season. The Premier League consisted of two rounds. In the First Round, every team played each opponent twice, once "home" and once "away" (in actuality, the designation of home and away were purely arbitrary as most of the clubs did not have their own grounds), for a total of 22 games. The league then split into two pools. Earned points are subsequently halved.
